Judd Apatow's This Is 40 stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann star as Pete and Debbie, the same married couple they played in Apatow's Knocked Up. As the movie opens, Debbie is turning 40 but tells everybody she's younger. She runs a small, boutique clothing store that's breaking even financially, while Pete manages a retro-minded indie-music label that's under serious financial strain just as they are trying to launch a new album by Graham Parker. Their money troubles are compounded by Pete's dad Larry (Albert Brooks), who continually hits up his son for cash because he has toddler triplets after an overly successful fertilization treatment with his younger second wife. Debbie has daddy issues as well. Her father (John Lithgow), an emotionally cold, highly successful surgeon, seems to want no part of his daughter's life, even though they meet for lunch occasionally after not talking to each other for a lengthy period of time. All of these people, along with Debbie's trainer, Pete's employees, and salesgirls from Debbie's boutique, arrive at the couple's beautiful home for a birthday party where all the familial wounds are opened. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

A Detroit cop's first day in the sex crimes unit reveals just how bizarre the lives of wealthy elite can get in this off-beat crime comedy set in the 1970s, and adapted from the novel by Elmore Leonard. Chris Mankowski (Billy Burke has just transferred into sex crimes from the bomb squad when a smoldering beauty (Sabina Gadeki) walks into his office accusing affluent local Woody Ricks (Crispin Glover) of rape. Hopelessly smitten by the pretty accuser, Mankowski launches a full investigation into the drunken eccentric Ricks, and promptly gets suspended for his efforts. But Mankowski rightly senses that there is more to the story than he realizes, and soon finds that the woman he's fallen for isn't the only shady character trying to get something from Ricks. Meanwhile, as the dogged detective investigates a host of potential suspects including Ricks' scheming servant and ex-Black Panther Donnell Lewis (Michael Jai White), volatile romance novelist Robin Abbot (Breanne Racano) and her mad-bomber accomplice Skip Gibbs (Christian Slater), and even Ricks' own yuppie brother (Andy Dick), each new clue yields an even stranger revelation than the last. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A high-school senior loses her little brother while trick-or-treating, and recruits three of her classmates to help bring him back home before her mother finds out in this teen comedy from first-time director Josh Schwartz (executive producer of TV's Chuck and Gossip Girl). Sardonic Wren (Victoria Justice) hails from an unusually dysfunctional family. She can't wait until she escapes to college and leaves them all behind, but in the meantime, an invitation to the biggest Halloween party in the area at least offers her an excuse to get out of the house for a night. But when Wren is placed on babysitting duty so her mother can dash out and party with her handsome young boy toy, the dejected teen reluctantly takes her little brother Albert out for a night of trick-or-treating. Later, when Albert vanishes into a sea of costumed kids, his panicked sister enlists the help of her best friend April, wannabe womanizer Peng, and his charmingly geeky pal Roosevelt to track down her missing brother, and get him safely back home while their mother remains none the wiser. Meanwhile, over the course of one wild and unpredictable Halloween night, the group's frantic search lands them in some pretty outlandish situations, and provides Roosevelt with the perfect opportunity to impress his longtime crush Wren. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A misfit dreamer trapped in a cramped L.A. apartment complex finds his grotesque reality intruding on his fantasies of moving to Switzerland in this off-beat comedy with a killer cast. Every time Franklin Franklin (Matt Lucas) blows his alphorn, his mind drifts to serine visions of the Alps. But Franklin's urban reality couldn't be any more different from his picturesque daydreams; from the pot-head in the next apartment (Johnny Knoxville) to their nosy neighbor (James Caan), to the oddball mother and daughter (Juno Temple) who live next door, there's never a moment of peace in the overcrowded building he calls home. As if all of this wasn't enough to break Franklin's spirit, his obnoxious brother Bernard (James Marsden) continues to send him fingernail clippings in the mail. It all comes to a head when Franklin finds himself saddled with his landlord Mr. Olivetti's corpse. Desperate to erase any evidence of a crime, the flighty outcast follows his talking dog's advice and tries to make it look like a suicide, leading to a series of darkly comic complications involving a fire investigator (Billy Crystal) who smells foul play.
