The discovery of an aborted fetus in a WW II-era Tuscan town nearly overloads the gossip mill in this black Italian comedy that is based on a play by director/screenwriter Ugo Chiti. The tale begins in 1939 just before Mussolini-controlled Italy entered the war. The fetus is unfortunately discovered on the eve of a visit by the great dictator. Wanting no trouble, the town's fascist secretary attempts a cover-up that is promptly blown with the unexpected late-night arrival of a party leader. He convinces the secretary to quickly find a scapegoat for the alleged crime. To find one, the secretary enlists the aid of his mistress. They choose the daughter of the town tart, but before they can convict her, she is examined by the town doctor whose findings set the stage for tragedy. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

In this low-budget actioner, Conrad Nichols is Rush, a superhero, a kind of jungle Rambo, determined to free the slave laborers who work for a villainous ruler (Gordon Mitchell) in a combination oil refinery and greenhouse. The difficulty he faces is that the laborers are afraid to return to the outside world -- a nuclear holocaust happened just 10 years earlier, and they worry about radiation sickness. It does not matter, apparently, that the oil refinery and greenhouse are already in the open air. Rush explains that everything is green again and radiation-free (an interesting concept), but between their doubts and the ruler's minions out to get him, life is not easy. Budget restrictions kept special effects and costuming to a minimum, making the choices for a "futuristic" look somewhat strange (the workers wear plastic over regular clothes, Rush wears body gloss), but most fans of this genre are willing to overlook these typical drawbacks. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Set in a post-nuclear society, Rage concentrates on a band of refugees in search of the elusive-and possibly inhabited--Alpha Base. Tooling about in 1940s-vintage automobiles, the survivors steal a map from the resident villain and embark on a perilous journey. In On the Beach fashion, they learn that the radio signals emanating from Alpha Base are not of human origin. Still, they find an unexpected source of salvation for mankind. Conrad Nichols stars as Rage, head of the ragtag group, while Taida Urruzola is the underclad heroine. The "Anthony Richmond" credited with the direction is actually Tonino Ricci. Completed in 1984, Rage was released in the US two years later. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Miller (Hugo Stiglitz) is a reporter on to something when he sees passengers disembark from a plane and start attacking and murdering whomever they come across -- no, they are not upset with their service, they are zombies -- or more accurately ghouls who need human blood to stay alive. While flight attendants may contend that more than one ghoul is on any flight, this group was contaminated by a man exposed to radiation that leaked from a nuclear plant, and they are hereafter identifiable by their black-face make-up, if not their eating habits. When Miller tries to notify the citizens that these monsters are on the loose, he is rudely stopped by a nasty general (Mel Ferrer) who does not want to make the public unnecessarily hysterical. The monsters have a molecular structure that is not affected by bullets, and so in imitation of the accepted code that zombies only die with a shot to the head, the general launches his attack "aiming for the control center" of each zombie head, before everyone is converted into the blood-thirsty monsters. With anemic acting, murky color, and other technical problems, this is simply another zombie film among the masses. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This shameless knockoff of Last House on the Left even goes so far as to repeat the detail of having the theme song performed by the lead villain. Florinda Bolkan (Non Si Sevizia un Paperino) plays a nun who takes the teenage girls in her care to a remote house where they rehearse A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ray Lovelock and a pair of thugs show up, brutally raping and terrorizing the girls -- killing one by raping her with a cane -- until Bolkan renounces her teachings and seeks bloody revenge. Utter nonsense, but AC/DC and Roxy Music are on the soundtrack, so it isn't a complete waste. Director Franco Prosperi is best known for co-directing Mondo Cane and Africa Addio. Sherry Buchanan (Dr. Butcher, M.D.) co-stars with Laura Trotter. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi
