Inspired by real events, writer/director Larysa Kondracki's intense docudrama tells the tale of an American policewoman who uncovers evidence of human trafficking while assisting a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Bosnia. Nebraska cop Kathy Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz) is caught in the middle of a vicious custody battle with her ex-husband when she seizes the opportunity to make a quick 100,000 dollars tax-free by spending six months in Bosnia as a U.N. peacekeeper. Shortly after Kathy arrives in Bosnia, Human Rights Commission head Madeleine Rees (Vanessa Redgrave) promotes her to the U.N.'s Gender Office, where she begins studying sexual-assault cases. But when Kathy discovers that her fellow peacekeepers are involved in a human-trafficking ring, the ensuing controversy makes her the target of some very powerful -- and incredibly ruthless -- people. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A routine run for a truck driver turns into a nightmare he can't escape in this psychological drama from filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa. Georgy (Viktor Nemets) is driving a load of freight into Russia when, after an unpleasant encounter with the police at a border crossing, he finds himself giving a lift to a strange old man (Vladimir Golovin) with disturbing stories about his younger days in the army. After next picking up a young woman (Olga Shuvalova) who works as a prostitute and is wary of the territory, Georgy finds himself lost, and despite asking some homeless men for help, he's less sure than he was before of how to make his way back where he belongs. As brutal images of violence and alienation cross the screen, Georgy's odyssey becomes darker and more desperate until it reaches an unexpected conclusion. A cop finds himself growing uncomfortable with his latest assignment in this study in the nature of power and authority from Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu. Cristi (Dragos Bucur) is a seasoned police detective who has just gotten married to Anca (Irina Saulescu) and wants to keep his superiors happy. Cristi's boss, Nelu (Ion Stoica), has ordered the detective to keep a close watch on Victor (Radu Costin), a teenager who is suspected of dealing drugs for a local cartel. Cristi has spent several weeks following Victor's actions and is certain that the kid smokes marijuana with his friends, but isn't any kind of drug pusher and should be left alone. Cristi is also aware that Romanian authorities are expected to relax their laws regarding drugs in the near future, making it all but pointless to possibly ruin Victor's life by bringing him in, but while Nelu understands Cristi's thinking, he's not so willing to let the youngster off so easily. Acclaimed Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu produced and coordinated this collection of short comic tales, all inspired by local legends regarding the quirky side of life under Communism. In "The Legend of the Official Visit," Inspector Sandu (Emanuel Pirvu) arrives in a small village to be sure all is in readiness for the arrival of a major party figure, even though no one's sure if he intends to actually stop and spend some time there. "The Legend of the Greedy Policeman" concerns Alexa (Ion Sapdaru) and his wife (Virginia Mirea), who have obtained a black-market pig and aren't sure how to slaughter and dress it without calling attention to themselves. In "The Legend of the Party Photographer," a photographer (Avram Birau) must put his retouching skills to work when a picture of Nicolae Ceausescu is wildly unflattering to the leader. "The Legend of the Air Sellers" follows Crina (Diana Cavallioti), a financially embarrassed student, who finds a may to make some fast money with the help of con man Bughi (Radu Iacoban) and some empty bottles. "The Legend of the Chicken Driver" tells the story of a by-the-book truck driver (Vlad Ivanov) who isn't certain what rules apply when the owner of a restaurant (Tania Popa) wants to buy some eggs laid by a chicken in his van. And another party member (Calin Chirila) who insists on following the rules even when he isn't sure what they are is the focus of "The Legend of the Zealous Activist." Early screenings of Tales from the Golden Age featured five of these six chapters, with the order and selection changing from night to night, supposedly in homage to the confusion of life under Ceausescu. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Director Cristian Mungiu's drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days unfolds in Romania in the late '80s, during the last waning days of Communist rule. Anamaria Marinca and Laura Vasiliu play, respectively, Otilia and Gabita, two female friends and students who share a Bucharest flat. They soon find themselves saddled with an overwhelming problem: Gabita is expecting. With abortion illegal in Romania at that time, the women seek an illicit termination at the hands of one Mr. Bebe (Vlad Ivanov) in a seedy Romanian hotel -- but Bebe refuses to accept money in return for his services and demands a certain "alternate" commodity instead. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
