Martin Lawrence reprises the role of FBI agent Malcolm Turner -- aka, undercover grandma Big Momma -- in this installment in the Big Momma's House franchise, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. Malcolm's latest assignment teams him up with his teenage stepson, Trent (Brandon T. Jackson), who unwittingly makes himself a target when he witnesses a murder. In order to keep Trent out of harm's way and solve the case behind the killing that Trent saw, the two have no choice but to go undercover at an all-girls performing arts school, with Malcolm posing as the titular rotund old lady, Big Momma, and Trent dressing up as a heavy female student named Charmaine. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award recipient James C. Strouse follows up his 2007 Sundance Film Festival favorite Grace Is Gone with this comedy drama about an alcoholic ex-basketball star who gets a second chance at success on the court when recruited by a local high school principal to coach the girl's varsity team. Bill (Sam Rockwell) used to sink hoops in the NBA, but that was before the bottle got the best of him. These days, Bill's more likely to be spotted bussing tables at the local diner than hustling up and down the court. Handed the reins on his daughter's basketball team by the school's principal, Bill seizes the opportunity to get back in the game and set things right. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Two individualistic teenagers find one another but learn that romance can be an uphill struggle in this independent drama. RJ (Paul Rodriguez Jr.) is an aspiring artist living in Venice, California who frequently draws caricatures of the world around him when he isn't busy playing chess. One night, introspective RJ meets Angel (Emily Rios), a free-spirited Latina who sings in a rock band and lives a reckless lifestyle in defiance of her own epilepsy. It's love at first sight for RJ and Angel, but while the two young adults are clearly drawn to one another, their friends and family are not pleased with the match. Angel's disfigured brother Smiler (Robert Zepeda) is wildly overprotective of her, and doesn't think RJ is good enough for Angel, and Fin (Trevor Wright), RJ's half brother, dislikes Angel while harboring a deep resentment towards RJ's close relationship with their father (Richard Edson). Vicious Circle was the first feature film from writer and director Paul Boyd. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Eric Nazarian's ensemble film The Blue Hour follows the interactions of a number of citizens of Los Angeles, using that city's river as the connective tissue for the disparate people. Among the characters are Happy, a graffiti artist accosted by a homeless man named Sal; a married couple having serious trouble coming to terms with the death of their young daughter; an ambitious would be bluesman; and a recently widowed retiree. Each of these people has contact with a handful of others, knowingly or not having an impact on their dreams, fears, and hopes. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

A Hispanic teenager travels the rough road to adult responsibility earlier than she expected in this independent drama. Magdalena (Emily Rios) is a young Latina who is looking forward to her upcoming quinceaqera celebration -- the 15th birthday party that marks the passage into adulthood for Mexican-American women. Magdalena's expectations are raised by the lavish party her older cousin Eileen (Alicia Sixtos) gets for the occasion, but Magdalena's mother (Araceli Guzman-Rico) and father (Jesus Castanos-Chima) insist on a lower-key affair that will focus on the more responsible aspects of grown-up life. However, Magdalena gets a crash course in that subject when she discovers she's pregnant with the child of her boyfriend, Herman (J.R. Cruz); life at home becomes unbearable for her, and she leaves to live with her more sympathetic uncle, Tio Thomas (Chalo Gonzalez). Home for Tio Thomas and Magdalena is a small apartment in a building owned by James (Jason L. Wood) and Gary (David W. Ross), a gay couple looking to gentrify the neighborhood. Magdalena strikes up a friendship with her cousin Carlos (Jesse Garcia), a roughneck teen with a good heart who is also on the outs with his family when they discover he's experimenting with his sexuality. Produced in part by Todd Haynes, Quinceaqera received its premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
