Ryan Donowho Movies

Actor Ryan Donowho signed for his first screen roles in the early 2000s. Thereafter, he specialized for a period of time in portrayals of intense, brooding, slightly troubled young men in earnest dramas -- a pattern exemplified by his work in such films as Rhythm of the Saints (2003), Bringing Rain (2003), The Mudge Boy (2003), A Home at the End of the World (2004) and Imaginary Heroes (2004). With Donowho's zany contribution to Michael Lehmann's decidedly offbeat comedy Flakes (2007), however, (in which he portrayed a character named Skinny Larry), the actor broke free of the trend that had characterized his prior career choices. In addition to his film work, Donowho also had a recurring role during the third season (2005-2006) of the popular TV drama The O.C., playing Johnny, a talented but troubled surfer whom Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) befriends. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Following up the acclaimed documentary Children of the Street, filmmaker Eva Aridjis made her narrative-feature debut with this bittersweet drama starring Frank Wood and Ryan Donowho. Wood plays Lawrence, a man who decides to take in Johnny (Donowho), the troubled teenaged son of his recently deceased high-school sweetheart. Twenty-five years ago, Caroline (Paige Turco) broke Lawrence's heart. These days, Lawrence is a single, middle-aged photographer leading a quiet life with his loyal canine companion in Bayonne, NJ. When Lawrence receives a surprise phone call from a recently divorced Caroline, romantic feelings are rekindled and his life suddenly takes on new meaning. Unfortunately, a life with Caroline wasn't in the cards for Lawrence, because shortly after the high-school sweethearts reconnect, Caroline dies in a sudden and tragic accident. Now, in order to prevent Carlone's troubled 16-year-old son, Johnny (Donowho), from being placed in foster care, Lawrence adopts the boy and tries his hardest to be a caring father. But Johnny wants nothing to do with Lawrence, instead choosing to follow in his biological father's footsteps by becoming a petty criminal and constructing an impenetrable wall of anger and silence. It seems that the only person capable of breaking through to Johnny is Mariana (Isidra Vega), a pretty neighborhood girl with whom the boy forms a warm bond. In time, Johnny begins to realize that Lawrence is a respectable role model and caring father figure who is willing to make the sacrifices needed for him to have a brighter future. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

First time writer/director Matt Nourse explores the uncertainty of the time when true identities begin to emerge in this tale of four friends attempting to come to terms with the loss of a dear friend. Eddy is a vagabond musician. Though he still comes off as his usual brash self even after the incident, it's obvious that his pain runs deeper when he skips town and asks his friends to mourn in his place. But Eddy's got no place left to run, and it isn't long before he comes back home with his tail between his legs. Meanwhile, guitar maker Barron is about as happy with his own picture-perfect life as he is with Eddy's decision to abandon his friends during such a tumultuous time. Barron's wife Farah is growing tired of her life as well, and though she's as striking and tempestuous as ever, the former dancer just can't seem to move like she used to. The only member of the group who seems destined for greater things is gifted painter Chelsea, who's currently making plans to move away and pursue a career. When Eddy returns to town to discover that his friends seem to have lost any remaining sympathy and fondness they once felt towards him, he flees to the Pacific ocean on an inward journey to embrace the loss that he never truly mourned. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Filmmaker Daniel Peddle offers a look at a little-examined side of lesbian culture in this documentary. "Aggressives" is a name used by some for women who prefer relationships with women, but choose to emphasize the masculine side of their personalities -- often to the extent of living in male drag, and through dress and exercise emphasizing their resemblance to men while toning down their female side. In The Aggressives, Peddle introduces us to six women who feel most comfortable while they embrace their inner male, including Kisha, a messenger whose clients don't all realize she's a woman; Rjai, who is seen getting fitted for a new suit while enjoying a small degree of celebrity after appearing on The Ricki Lake Show; Tiffany, whose persona is that of a gay man and is in a relationship with a man who is undergoing gender reassignment treatments; Octavia, who after being sent to prison on drug charges finds herself forced to take on a new and more violent persona while behind bars; and Marquise, who undergoes a similar crisis when she joins the Army. The Aggressives was Daniel Peddle's first feature film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Directed by Michael Mayer and based on The Hours author Michael Cunningham's novel of the same name, A Home at the End of the World chronicles the 1980s reunion of childhood best friends Bobby (Colin Farrell) and Jonathan (Dallas Roberts). Where they were once best pals -- and teenage lovers -- in the suburbs of Cleveland, Bobby has become a charismatic but go-nowhere heterosexual slacker, and Jonathan is now living as an openly gay man in New York City, hoping to serve as father to his eccentric roommate Clare's (Robin Wright Penn) child. When Bobby impulsively moves to the city to be closer to his former friend, their bonds are tested sooner than anyone would have thought. Bobby falls for Clare, and in doing so, effectively eliminates what would have been Jonathan's position in the baby's life. Jonathan temporarily takes off; when his father dies, and he attends the Arizona funeral, Bobby and Clare unexpectedly turn up with the news that she's expecting. Despite the still-existent tensions, the trio becomes a family unit among themselves, ultimately buying a house in Woodstock, Upstate New York, where they all move together, challenging traditional notions of family, commitment, love, and devotion. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

A shocking and tragic event causes the members of a quietly dysfunctional family to reexamine themselves and their lives in this drama. Ben and Sandy Travis (Jeff Daniels and Sigourney Weaver) are a couple whose troubled family begins to crumble when their eldest son, star college athlete Matt (Kip Pardue) commits suicide. Sandy's naturally cynical nature becomes all the more prickly, and while she tries to bond with her surviving teenaged son, Tim (Emile Hirsch), they seem closest when they discover a shared fondness for marijuana. Ben also tries to reach out to Tim, but the young man is never able to shake the feeling that he's never quite been the son his father wanted. Tim has a girlfriend, Steph (Suzanne Santo), but their relationship has been going through a rocky patch, and Tim finds himself questioning his feelings about women and men when his friendship with next-door neighbor Kyle (Ryan Donowho) evolves into something more intimate. Writer/director Michael Burke makes his feature-length debut with the coming-of-age drama The Mudge Boy. Known as a weird kid, Duncan Mudge (Emile Hirsch) is a naïve 14-year-old farm boy with an aging father, Edgar (Richard Jenkins), and very little social life. When Duncan's mother suddenly dies, he develops a strange fascination with her clothes, speaks in her voice, and spends his time with his pet chicken. His father and the other people in the town just don't understand his behavior, while the other kids make fun of him. A drunken group of older boys call him names, but they eventually allow him to hang out with them if he provides beer money. Duncan admires one of the boys, Perry (Tom Guiry), who reveals some hidden truths about himself. As the relationship between the two deepens, it begins to take on darker, more ominous shadings. The Mudge Boy premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
