Arthouse favorite Olivier Assayas followed up his critical darling L'Heure d'Été (2008) with this wildly different chronicle -- a biopic of the ultra-left-wing Venezuelan terrorist-cum-mercenary Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, popularly known as "Carlos the Jackal." As co-written by Assayas and scenarist Dan Franck, the account spans the years 1973-1994 -- or the period that witnessed Sanchez at his most violent and relentless. Narrative touchstones include the 1974 bomb attack at the Publicis Drugstore on Paris' Left Bank and the 1975 abduction of 11 OPEC officials from Vienna, as well as a torrent of assassinations that Carlos and his cronies planned but didn't carry out. As produced by Daniel Leconte, this telling of Sanchez's life stars Edgar Ramirez as the terrorist, as well as Alexander Scheer, Aljoscha Stadelmann, and Julia Hummer; it was predominantly shot in Germany, France, and Lebanon. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A Munich teen achieves worldwide fame as the embodiment of sexual freedom in the 1960s after romancing some of the biggest rock stars on the planet and rising to stardom as a successful supermodel in this biographical musical drama centering on the eventful life of Uschi Obermaier. Until she arrived at the legendary Berlin "Kommune 1," Obermaier (Natalia Avelon) was just your typical German teen. All of that would quickly change, however, as Obermaier entered into a heated affair with leader Rainer Langhans (Matthias Schweighofer), appeared on the covers of Playboy and Stern, and became an icon of the young generation. But even when offered the opportunity to become an international film star by Italian producer Carlo Ponti, Obermaier refuses to trade her freedom for fleeting fame. Later, after experiencing the darker side of fame during a relationship with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and realizing that she can no longer reconcile her outlook on life with living like a common groupie, the outspoken hippie nymph embarks on a quest to find eternal love with charismatic globe-trotter Dieter Bockhorn, the owner of Hamburg's red-light district. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A would-be ad man starts talking his way to the top, only to discover he has a shortage of usable ideas in this satiric German comedy. Viktor Vogel (Alexander Scheer) is a college student who decides he's tired of studying advertising and wants to go out and start making a living, even though he has more in the way of bluster than experience. Viktor fast-talks his way into a meeting at a major advertising agency and somehow his double talk impresses one of the firm's top executives, who hires him on the spot. Viktor is teamed up Eddie Kaminsky (Gotz George), one of the agencies top directors, and Eddie (who makes his dislike of Viktor immediately clear) needs an idea for a new campaign on the spot. Viktor pitches an idea to Eddie, who decides to go with it, but there's one problem -- it's the same idea Viktor's new girlfriend Rosa (Chulpan Khamatova) came up with for an art project. Obviously, neither side will be happy when they discover they're both using the same idea, so Viktor has to ask himself if his loyalties lie with his new employers or his significant other. Viktor Vogel -- Commercial Man was released in the United States as Advertising Rules. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
