Caroline Rhea Movies

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Caroline Rhea launched herself on the path to stardom in 1986, when the then-22-year-old moved to Manhattan and enrolled in the New School for Social Research's standup comedy program. On the side, Rhea cut her chops by practicing at the standup club Catch a Rising Star, and the success of those engagements yielded additional bookings, not simply at Big Apple venues, but on such national television programs as Comic Strip Live and Caroline's Comedy Hour. Rhea segued into scripted television programs and features around 1996, with roles on such sitcoms as Sabrina the Teenage Witch and The Drew Carey Show, before hitting a watershed moment in her career: the launch of her own eponymous series, the talk program The Caroline Rhea Show (which followed her guest-hosting of The Rosie O'Donnell Show).

Unfortunately, Rhea's talk show folded less than a year after its 2002 premiere, but Rhea continued to build her own reputation, with popular standup bookings across the U.S. and Canada, appearances on talk programs such as Live with Regis and Kelly, and small roles in movies. She played Candi in the disastrous Tim Allen holiday comedy Christmas With the Kranks (2004) and Gloria in the Mark Rosman-directed teen movie The Perfect Man (2005), and hosted the popular series The Biggest Loser, a reality series in which contestants compete to determine who can lose the most weight. In 2006, Rhea also hosted the made-for-cable standup special Caroline Rhea: Rhea's Anatomy, which found her offering witty divertissements on such subjects as post-40 pregnancy and age-disparity romances. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A high school athlete learns an important lesson in reserving judgment after suffering a sports injury that blows her chance for a scholarship, and filming a documentary about what it's like to be fat. Seventeen-year-old Aly (Kaley Cuoco) is pretty, confident, and strong. She's a true star on the softball field, but after blowing out her knee, Aly's chances of winning a sports scholarship start to look slim. A firm believer in the power of personality, Aly thinks that overweight people like her brother and mother allow themselves to fall victim to their own low self-esteem. Before long, Aly is donning a fat suit and a camera in order to prove that obese people aren't pariahs. If she can make her point, Aly reckons, perhaps she can score a film scholarship. The second she walks into school in her new skin, however, the unsympathetic teen quickly discovers just how cruel and unforgiving her peers can really be. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Determined to make a name for herself in the male dominated sport that recently claimed the life of her talented father, a female race car driver with a lead foot and love for speed punches the gas and never looks back in this family-oriented sports drama starring Mircea Monroe and Justin Guarini. Ever since she was just a young girl, Alex Johnstone (Monroe) knew that she was destined to become a true racing champion. But Alex's uncle Bill (Dwier Brown) is the man in charge of the local speedway, and there's no way he's going to lose another relative on the racetrack. As determined as Bill is to prevent his niece from crashing and burning, however, Alex is equally resolute in proving that she has what it takes to keep pace with the best male drivers around. Later, as Alex becomes involved with a professional racecar driver (Guarini) who has a reputation for always crossing the checkered flag first, the young girl's conflict proves much more complex than simple black and white. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A girl plays Cupid for her mom, but has to invent the right man to woo her in this romantic comedy. Jean Hamilton (Heather Locklear) is a single mother with two daughters, teenaged Holly (Hilary Duff) and grade-school-aged Zoe (Aria Wallace). Fortysomething Jean has stumbled in and out of a number of bad relationships in her lifetime, and is desperate to find a good man; however, Holly has grown a bit tired of Jean's favored means of therapy after a bad breakup -- packing up the family and moving to a new city. Once Jean and her girls settle in Brooklyn, Holly thinks they should stay for a while, and when Jean's romantic prospects begin to look less than rosy, Holly and her new friend Amy (Vanessa Lengies) decide to invent a secret admirer for her. Needing advice on what the "perfect man" would say and do, Holly and Amy turn to Ben (Chris Noth), Amy's uncle, who talks a very good game when it comes to romance. But convincing Jean that there's a real man behind the steady stream of letters and e-mails from her new admirer isn't as easy as Holly imagines, and it looks as if her imaginary suitor might get in the way of a flesh-and-blood Mr. Right. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Based on John Grisham's novel Skipping Christmas, Christmas With the Kranks revolves around Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Luther Krank's (Tim Allen) decision to put their normally fanatical enthusiasm for the holidays aside for a tropical cruise. With their daughter in Peru with the Peace Corps, the Kranks believe it just isn't worth it; thus, no presents, Christmas trees, or decorations of any kind will adorn their house to the great consternation of their neighbor Vic (Dan Aykroyd). Just as it looks like Christmas will be successfully skipped, Blair (Julie Gonzalo) throws a major kink into her plans when she suddenly has a change of heart and announces she'll be coming home for Christmas after all. The film ran into troubles early on in production when Ben Affleck's similar sounding bomb Surviving Christmas won the race to the theaters, forcing the filmmakers to depart from the book title in favor of the catchy Kranks one. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

When Rosie O'Donnell retired from her popular syndicated daytime talk show in 2002, she was careful to hand-pick her successor. That lucky person was comic actress Caroline Rhea, whose earlier attempts to launch her own chat show were unsuccessful until she was anointed by Princess Rosie. The Caroline Rhea Show followed the O'Donnell format faithfully, with plenty of interviews, human-interest segments, spontaneous musical numbers, and comedy sketches. The only difference was the person in the host's chair, and Rhea did an admirable job stamping her own unique personality on the familiar proceedings. Taped in New York, the daily, 60-minute The Caroline Rhea Show was distributed by Warner Bros. Television beginning September 2, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

First seen over the Showtime cable network on June 29, 2001, On the Edge is a compendium of three short science-fiction films, each with a decidedly feminist slant. The first segment, directed by Helen Mirren, is "Happy Birthday," in which a straight-A student (Sidney Tamilia Poitier) seeks recourse after she is "quota'd out" of graduate school. Next up is "The Other Side," directed by Mary Stuart Masterson, wherein a scientific genius (Anthony LaPaglia) clones himself upon learning that he has inoperable cancer -- only to find himself and his clone as two points in a romantic triangle. Closing out the program is writer/director Anne Heche's "Reaching Normal," the tale of a bored housewife (Andie McDowell) and her "telepathic twin," an eccentric college professor (Paul Rudd). The best of the batch is "Happy Birthday"; the other two stories are distressingly predictable. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
