A south-of-the-border jaunt turns into a Mexican fiasco when a group of California twenty-somethings arrive in Baja for their annual New Year's Eve surfing trip, and become pawns in an explosive showdown between the local mayor and the corrupt police force. Brandt (Tom Carver) is a failed entrepreneur who's just lost his girlfriend, his business, and his mojo. But Brandt's best friend TK (Kenny Morrison) has the perfect cure -- a New Year's Eve surf trip to Baja, Mexico with his girlfriend Mackenzie (Kansas Carradine) and their best bud, Unis (Rini Bell), who's waging a valiant battle against cancer. Unfortunately, Brandt expected to stay in a luxury resort, and when he emerges from his drunken stupor to realize that the gang is instead staying at a primitive campsite on a rural Mexican beach inhabited by a hungry donkey, he prepares to hightail it back home. But Kenny changes Brandt's mind by convincing him to give the "real" Mexico a shot. Now, inspired by Unis' bravery and realizing he has little to return home to, Brandt finally starts to loosen up. Later, when the gang's bus breaks down and they get caught up in a violent battle between the mayor and the corrupt local police, they gain a newfound appreciation for their flawed lives and attempt to outrun the bullets and make it back to their home country. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

In this historical drama from Mexico, Damian Delgado plays Topilzin, a writer and the illegitimate son of Montezuma, who finds himself at odds with his nation's new leadership after Tenocchititlan's rule is put down by the Spanish Army in 1520. Topilzin refuses to adopt the new state-imposed religion and, after narrowly avoiding arrest following an incident in which he throws a rock at a friar, he's turned over to the police by his brother, and arrested in the presence of Hernando Cortes (Inaki Aierra) and his lover, Tecuichpo (Elpidia Carrillo), the daughter of Montezuma. Thanks to the pleas of Cortes and Tecuichpo, Topilzin's life is spared, and instead he is flogged in public by Capt. Quijano (Honorato Magaloni). After his punishment and an ensuing spiritual epiphany, Topilzin gives up his career as an author to become a monk, and he joins an order led by Fray Diego (Jose Carlos Rodriguez), the friar he once attacked. La Otra Conquista proved to be a big box-office success in Mexico, enjoying the biggest opening weekend of any Mexican film in history on its home turf. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A powerful political allegory set in an unnamed Latin American country, Men With Guns concerns Dr. Fuentes (Federico Luppi), an elderly physician long involved with a group that trains young people to provide health care for the poverty-stricken citizens of the outlying hill country, where small agricultural communities struggle to survive under primitive living conditions. The doctor has heard rumors that many of his former students are lost and feared dead, so he goes into the hills to investigate. The deeper he digs into the jungle, the more Fuentes finds that the people are menaced by "men with guns'" -- military forces who use torture and execution to intimidate the people, and guerillas from opposition groups whose agenda is only marginally more benign. Accumulating several travelling companions -- a defrocked priest, a deserter from the Army, a boy who survives by stealing, and a woman who has turned mute since she was raped -- Fuentes finds that his journey becomes more revealing but also more perilous the deeper he ventures into the hills. American writer and director John Sayles filmed most of Men With Guns in Spanish (an language he speaks fluently), as well as several indigenous dialects; he claims to have based most of the film's incidents on actual events that have occurred in a number of different Third World nations. Mandy Patinkin has a brief role as an American tourist Fuentes encounters in his travels. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
