Upon discovering that her husband is having an affair, a Helsinki gynecologist attempts to gather more knowledge about her rival and, in the process, becomes hopelessly entangled in the other woman's life - partially on purpose but primarily out of happenstance. Saara is pretty, elegant, liberal, and friendly to a fault. Yet while surface appearances would suggest that Saara is something of an open book, the truth is that lately no one has looked deeper enough to notice otherwise. Driven by jealousy to find out why her husband Leo has grown distant as of late, the sleuthing wife soon discovers that her spouse has recently entered into an affair with a young student and part-time martial arts instructor named Tulli. Her desire to learn more about Tulli growing with each passing hour, Saara eventually signs up as a student in one of the woman's self-defense classes. Eventually, Saara integrates herself into Tulli's life by blending fact and fiction to create a new persona. While Saara's crafty bid to find out more about Tulli without revealing her true identity is indeed successful, her deceptions start to snowball after she creates a fictitious lover in order to mislead her husband. The satisfaction of turning the tables on her husband gradually begins to dissipate, however, when the complex web of deceit becomes too unwieldy to maintain, plunging everyone involved into a hopeless cycle of despair and revenge. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Jade Warrior director Antti-Jussi Annila crafts this transcendentalist shocker set in 1595, and following two brothers as they descend into a world where there is no such thing as salvation. Protestant Sweden and Orthodox Russia have just reached an uneasy truce. In the wake of their fighting, Finland has become a wasteland. Conquered Finnish brothers Knut and Erik are polar opposites; one is a hardened warrior whose mind has been twisted by the horrors of war, the other is a gentle scientist with no use for fighting. Both have been assigned the task of denoting the new border between Finland and Russia, though they're about to commit a sin that will haunt them both for the rest of their days. After leaving a young girl to die an excruciating death, Knut and Erik forge ahead into an uncharted swamp, eventually reaching an unmapped town where their mere presence awakens a force of unspeakable evil. The girl has returned to haunt them, a horror that both brothers attempt to escape by washing away their sins in a mysterious sauna. But this sauna holds a terrifying secret, and in this godforsaken land there is no mercy for men who would permit such atrocities to be committed against a mere innocent. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A handful of jaded teenagers fall into a strange game with disturbing results in this drama from Finland. Taavi (Jussi Nikkila) is an 18-year-old whose wealthy parents died when he was young. Now that he's of age and is soon to graduate from high school, Taavi has inherited his family's mansion and enough money to last him for life. Taavi enjoys recording everything around him with his digital video camera, and when the graduation party he throws for his friends turns into a drunken bacchanal, he videotapes his friends Sami (Ville Kivela), Jeri (Reino Nordin), and Markus (Jarkko Niemi) having sex with a girl who has passed out. While watching the video the next day, Taavi poses a challenge to his friends -- that they should each tape themselves having sex with a different woman, and whoever brings in the best and most unusual results will win a prize. The four young men agree to the contest, but soon playful voyeurism gives way to something uglier and more desperate as the boys go to greater lengths to top their friends in kinkiness. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Based on a novel by Antii Tuuri, Talvisota is a dramatized commemoration the 1939 Russo-Finnish war. Threatened with total annexation, Finland courageously faced down the Soviet forces, despite being outnumbered 50 to 1. The tiny country loses the vital Karelian Isthmus, but Finland remains an independent nation, never falling into the Communist sphere as the Soviets had intended. This long (3 hours plus) but never draggy film personalizes the war by concentrating on the exploits of one beleaguered resistance fighter (Taneli Makela). Also known as The Winter War, Talvisota was Finland's candidate for the 1989 Best Foreign Film Oscar. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this melodrama, Marten, Ursula and Harri have gotten themselves into a life of drug-peddling, but now they want to get out of it. Like all such situations, it proves to be more difficult than just stating one's intentions. It's not clear that these three indecisive people are really up to the challenge they have posed for themselves. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
