Proud son of Canada Neil Young returns home for a special concert in this documentary directed by Jonathan Demme. Raised in Winnipeg, Young was born in Toronto, and while touring North America in 2011 in support of his album Le Noise, he played a solo show at Massey Hall in Toronto, one of the nation's most prestigious venues. Demme and a camera crew were on hand to document the performance (with the sound crew using a new high-resolution, digital-recording process designed under Young's supervision), and Neil Young Journeys features the artist alone with his guitars and keyboards, playing a rich variety of material from his songbook, ranging from iconic hits to selections from Le Noise and some brand-new material. Demme also joins Young for a road trip through Ontario, as he visits landmarks from his youth and recalls what once was as well as commenting on what is. Neil Young Journeys was Jonathan Demme's third feature-length documentary on Young, following 2006's Neil Young: Heart of Gold and 2009's Neil Young Trunk Show. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In 2005, legendary rocker Neil Young and filmmaker Jonathan Demme collaborated on the concert film Neil Young: Heart of Gold, shot during a series of performances at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium; the film was designed to sum up the larger themes of Young's music, and was inspired in part by the musician being diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain aneurysm. In 2009, Young, who had since been given a clean bill of health, teamed up with Demme for a second concert documentary, but while Heart of Gold focused on the country-influenced side of Young's body of work, 2009's Neil Young Trunk Show is dominated by his love of unvarnished hard rock, with plenty of Young's trademark noisy guitar solos and extended workouts with his band (including longtime collaborators Ralph Molina and Ben Keith). Featuring a set of classic hits and songs from Young's 2008 album Chrome Dreams II, Neil Young Trunk Show was an official selection at the 2009 AFI Fest, a film festival presented by the American Film Institute. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In the fall of 2005, Neil Young returned to the sound and style of his iconic 1972 album Harvest with Prairie Wind, a set of ten songs which look to America's past and future accompanied by sweet but rough-hewn country-rock. The album was written and recorded after Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, and shortly before he went into the hospital for surgery for the condition, Young played a pair of special concerts at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry, where he performed the Prairie Wind album in full along with a set of old favorites. Filmmaker Jonathan Demme was on hand to film the shows, and Neil Young: Heart of Gold was culled from the best moments of those two concerts, as well as interviews in which Young talks about his life and music. Emmylou Harris appears as a guest vocalist, and Young's band includes long time accompanists Ben Keith on pedal steel, pianist Spooner Oldham and Pegi Young (Neil's wife) on acoustic guitar and backing vocals. The director of Greendale, Bernard Shakey is much better known as the rock icon Neil Young. Greendale is a feature-length adaptation of Young's album of the same name. Following the lives of a family in a small town, the film's actors lip sync the dialogue as it appears in the songs, which are all present in the versions heard on the CD. The story concerns Arius Green (Ben Keith), a friendly old-timer who lives on the Double-E ranch with his family. His son Earl (James Mazzeo) is a struggling painter. When cousin Jed (Eric Johnson) murders Officer Carmichael (Paul Supplee), there is a media frenzy that brings about the death of Arius. Arius' granddaughter Sun Green (Sarah White) sets off on a life of social protest. Greendale was screened at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Based on a popular series of video games, Wing Commander introduces us to an elite fighter squadron in the year 2654. The Earth confederation is at war with a vicious race called the Kilrathi. The Kilrathi have captured a navigational device which will allow them to jump through worm-holes in space to arrive behind enemy lines. Only this highly trained squadron, led by three young pilots, stand in their way. Christopher "Maverick" Blair (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is just out of the Academy, but his lack of experience is more than compensated by his exceptional navigational skills, though he is still haunted by the deaths of his parents in a previous galactic war. His friend, Todd "Maniac" Mashall (Matthew Lillard), is a brash, gung-ho fighter jock always rushing into danger. Their wing commander and leader is Jeanette "Angel" Deveraux (Saffron Burrows). Assigned these two new pilots by Admiral Geoffery Tolwyn (David Warner), the strong and beautiful Deveraux is at first resentful, but later develops feelings for Blair. Independent film hero Jim Jarmusch followed Neil Young & Crazy Horse during their 1996 world tour and captured it on handheld Super-8. Spliced with archival footage shot by Young and with current interviews from all band members and Young's father, the result is not so much an overview of the band's career as an homage to the power of the band's consistent and timeless work as a four-piece. With three other Neil Young concert films available on home video (Rust Never Sleeps, Weld, Neil Young Unplugged) Year of the Horse seems a bit redundant, but was obviously a labor of love for Jarmusch. Though the current concert footage seems to drag on (Crazy Horse's propensity for endless jamming isn't exciting every night), the old backstage interviews and a classic clip of live Young from 1976 is worth the viewing. ~ Denise Sullivan, Rovi
A dark, bitter commentary on modern American life cloaked in the form of a surrealist western, Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man stars Johnny Depp as William Blake, a newly-orphaned accountant who leaves his home in Cleveland to accept a job in the frontier town of Machine. Upon his arrival, Blake is told by the factory owner Dickinson (Robert Mitchum) that the job has already been filled. Dejectedly, he enters a nearby tavern, ultimately spending the night with a former prostitute. A violent altercation with the woman's lover (Gabriel Byrne), also Dickinson's son, leaves Blake a murderer as well as mortally wounded, a bullet lodged dangerously close to his heart. He flees into the wilderness, where a Native American named Nobody (Gary Farmer) mistakes Blake for the English poet William Blake and determines that he will be Blake's guide in his protracted passage into the spirit world. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Acclaimed filmmaker Jonathan Demme (whose credits include The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia) spent two days at Complex Recording Studios in Los Angeles, as Neil Young and Crazy Horse worked on songs for their album Sleeps With Angels. Neil Young & Crazy Horse: The Complex Sessions was the result, on which Demme uses subtle camera movements and light effects to reflect the many moods of Young's music. At the time of its release, Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia was the first big-budget Hollywood film to tackle the medical, political, and social issues of AIDS. Tom Hanks, in his first Academy Award-winning performance, plays Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer at a stodgy Philadelphia law firm. The homosexual Andrew has contracted AIDS but fears informing his firm about the disease. The firm's senior partner, Charles Wheeler (Jason Robards), assigns Andrew a case involving their most important client. Andrew begins diligently working on the case, but soon the lesions associated with AIDS are visible on his face. Wheeler abruptly removes Andrew from the case and fires him from the firm. Andrew believes he has been fired because of his illness and plans to fight the firm in court. But because of the firm's reputation, no lawyer in Philadelphia will risk handling his case. In desperation, Andrew hires Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), a black lawyer who advertises on television, mainly handling personal injury cases. Miller dislikes homosexuals but agrees to take the case for the money and exposure. As Miller prepares for the courtroom battle against one of the law firm's key litigators, Belinda Conine (Mary Steenburgen), Miller begins to realize the discrimination practiced against Andrew is no different from the discrimination Miller himself has to battle against.
