Atmospheric, deliberately paced and very cool... finally restored, uncut & complete. Hugely influential,..influenced many more familiar, American films,.... involving and interesting...with a simply great heist scene (which itself is heavily influenced by the superb film "Rififi")....... ...as smart and fun and beautifully crafted & spun movie as you're going to find.

And what's with that Plymouth? Did French gangsters think that car was cool? I spent half the movie laughing at the ridiculous car, with Alain Delon at the wheel, and (snort!) Gian-Maria Volonté in the TRUNK! Puhleeze! But I did love the performance of Bourvil, as the cop trying to catch the escaped con. He was great. So was Yves Montand as an alcoholic sharpshooter. The rest of the film...not so hot. And not even close to Rififi, which really is a great crime film--Jules Dassin's riff on the greatest heist flick of them all, John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle.

An excellent French film from Melville, and one I enjoyed more than "Le Samourai" because of the sympathetic characters. It also has a greater sense of realism, as well as a great score, sparse narrative, necessary but not overwhelming violence, and a Plymouth Fury III as a supporting cast member.
