I Vampiri (1956)

I Vampiri (1956)
Member Rating:
This Italian vampire tale stars Gianna Maria Canale as an ancient, sultry bloodsucker who, much like real-life kinswoman Countess Bathory, can only maintain her youthful appearance through the regular consumption of a serum derived from virgins' blood. When she begins to age again, she demands better results from the serum's inventor, who proceeds to capture more young maidens... but her plan is undone by the meddling of an intrepid reporter. Originally titled I Vampiri (The Vampires), this science-fiction-flavored variation on the Vampire Gothic kicked Italy's horror film machine into high gear, helped greatly by the cinematography of noted horror filmmaker Mario Bava -- who shared some directorial duties with Riccardo Freda and designed some of the special effects. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Mario Bava is an unsung (or at least "under-sung") genius who reminds me of Robert Wise in many ways - a thoroughly competent, sometimes inspired director who worked in many different genres and redefined half of 'em as he went. Bava had the eye of a cinematographer - he was one for quite a while - and also invented in-camera FX which are some of the most striking in BW film history... just when movies were turning color! Bava's later stuff is better known, like The Mask of Satan (aka Black Sunday) - but this is almost as good.

Ok a classic black and white "horror" movie with an old dusty castle and a duchess. But I don't understand where the vampire comes into play. It is more of a who done it movie then a horror movie. Directed by Mario Bava this had its erie moments. I don't know how they do the special effects when you can't see when they stop the camera to do the touchups on her aging process. It must be done with lights and light filters. A good story but misleading by the title of the film. I wish it had been dubbed in English....I hate having to read the subtitles! ~ Susan L.
