The Stepford Wives (1975)
Member Rating:
In the William Goldman-scripted, Bryan Forbes-directed adaptation of Ira Levin's savagely satiric sci-fi novel The Stepford Wives, housewife Joanna (Katharine Ross) moves with husband Walter (Peter Masterson) and their children to the "ideal" suburban community of Stepford, CT. Slowly, Joanna deduces that something is amiss; most of the other housewives are vapid creatures who speak in trivialities and live only to please their husbands. Together with new friend Bobby (Paula Prentiss), she investigates this curious status quo. When Bobby also succumbs to cloying sweetness, Joanna discovers that Stepford's husbands have conspired with male chauvinist scientists to replace all the wives with computerized android duplicates. The Stepford Wives became a massive, runaway hit, earning four million dollars domestically. Mega-producer Scott Rudin and director Frank Oz teamed up for a remake in 2004. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I saw the original the week before seeing the new release by Frank Oz. As I result, I could not stop thinking how fantastic this original is compared to the remake. The subtle drama in the original, while slow to start, was fantastic. The ending of that original stayed with you long after the movie was over. With the remake, however, I found myself wanting to watch anything else after just 10 minutes into the movie. The remade movie is very dumbed down, and in your face with the thin plot. Watching the remake is a complete waste of time, don't do it. I do highly recommend the original, especially when you consider that the original was made in 1975, just at the dawn of personal computers and robotics. The original relies on a strong plot and acting to succeed, whereas this remake has lousey acting paired with special effects, resulting in one of the most boring movies of all time. I highly recommend this movie -- as long as you don't mind the slow start.

I wanted to see the original Stepford Wives before I rented the new one. I was really surprised at how good this one was. Even though you can tell by the clothes and cars the age of the movie the overall story line was great. It really makes you think about how things are not always as they seem and even though from the outside it may look fantastic, what did it take to really make it appear that way....Awesome Movie....

This movie, while taking time for the plot to develop, really gets going if you know what you are looking for. Everything in the beginning will start making sense, and you will want to watch it over with your friends. You can then watch their reactions and faces as they figure out what is going on. Awesome movie. By the way, you know the remake with all the big, hot movie stars? They are out- acted in the original. The remake can't hold a candle to this one. Enjoy!
