Will Vinton, the stop-motion animation whiz who brought us The California Raisins, is the principal creative force behind The Adventures of Mark Twain. A clay-model Twain, voiced by James Whitmore, sets out in a hot-air balloon to find Halley's Comet. Joining the waspish humorist on his journey are some of his favorite creations, including Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher and Huckleberry Finn. As the balloon ascends further into the sky, we are treated to animated dramatization of such Twain classics as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Though brilliantly conceived and executed, Adventures of Mark Twain might have been even more effective had it been shortened by ten minutes or so. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I remember watching and loving this movie as a little kid and, suprisingly, watching it again now was just as entertaining. Just the claymation itself is incredible and the shorts of Mark Twain's stories are really well done, I especially like the Diaries of Adam and Eve. If you are looking for a purely innocent children's movie, this is not it. There are some darker themes throughout the movie, so I can understand why some parents don't approve of it as a children's movie - however, those more complex themes are really what make it great. For this reason alone, I would define it more as a cult classic (for all ages), rather than a straight-up children's classic (and I think the various blogs and such about this movie really back that opinion up).

I used to watch this movie when I was growing up. I wore out the vhs copy years ago! It is a timeless classic, and glad it finally made the jump to dvd.

The animation is fantastic and the concept is an interesting way to introduce children to some of Twain's works. However, the idea of Twain and his characters sailing in the sky to meet up with Halley's comet makes this unecessarily confusing. Not having read the synopsis beforehand, it took us awhile to figure out what was really going on. The storyline dragged in several places, and some of the scenes were too scary for some young children at bedtime. I wouldn't recommend this for children unless an adult watched with them -- most of the references to Twain's work will be completely lost on them.
