Protestant Sweden and Orthodox Russia have just reached an uneasy truce. In the wake of their fighting, Finland has become a wasteland. Conquered Finnish brothers Knut and Erik are polar opposites; one is a hardened warrior whose mind has been twisted by the horrors of war, the other is a gentle scientist with no use for fighting. Both have been assigned the task of denoting the new border between Finland and Russia, though they're about to commit a sin that will haunt them both for the rest of their days. After leaving a young girl to die an excruciating death, Knut and Erik forge ahead into an uncharted swamp, eventually reaching an unmapped town where their mere presence awakens a force of unspeakable evil. The girl has returned to haunt them, a horror that both brothers attempt to escape by washing away their sins in a mysterious sauna. But this sauna holds a terrifying secret, and in this godforsaken land there is no mercy for men who would permit such atrocities to be committed against a mere innocent. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Good lord! If a movie is from Finland, maybe it will have subtitles. Wow. Just watched this movie. Not great...it has some very slow parts with unnecessary dialogue and story elements that make it seem confusing, but be patient. The whole movie IS slow, but it takes about a half hour to start grabbing you. Once it gets going, I thought this was very watchable. By the end I had no problems following the plot, and only had to rewind a couple times, because the subtitles go fast with the dialogue. Overall, I liked it and thought it did a good job making the viewer feel awkward and dirty. Felt like a foreign Ravenous w/o any dark comedy, which is OK. There should be more period based horror movies. I would watch out for this director in the future. Plot was the only drawback for me, but not for all of it. THIS MOVIE IS NOT FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON WITH A SHORT ATTENTION SPAN!

I thought it was a good movie without the ghost part. The bordering of Russia, Sweden, and Norway in the 1500's. The plot is basically the ghost of a girl that was left to die by the map makers comes back to haunt them.

Strikingly beautiful Finnish art house horror film about guilt, religion, sin and punishment, set in the 16th century, at the end of the Russian/Swedish war. Full of atmosphere, symbolism, and unanswered questions, two Swedish brothers/soldiers, one intellectual, one violent and borderline mad, come to a strange town where they are confronted with eerie reminders of their sins, and of those they have killed in war. Slow paced, but not boring, The ideas got stretched a bit thin over time, and the occasional turn to horror cliches a little disappointing given the generally high level of intelligence of the piece. Still, interesting enough that I would give it another look now that I understand what it is getting at, and gorgeous enough that I will still enjoy it, even if I still had mixed feelings about the content. Mention also must be made of the arresting performance by Ville Virtanen as the violent Eerik,“ recalling prime Max Von Sydow.
