As he points out, Mr. Burns is not trying to give a comprehensive picture of WWII. That would be nearly impossible to do without interviewing thousands of people and sifting through even more archival material that the vast amount he has already processed. Instead he provides an excellent window onto the war as seen from a U.S. perspective. This story lets people hear from those who were there and see, through well-chosen film footage and photos, what it was like to be an American in WWII, whether at home, on the front lines, or in a P.O.W. camp. These are the personal stories of a handful of individuals, yet I felt that they were representative of what many people experienced. I've only held back a star and a half because the time needed to tell the story can make for tedious watching when taken in large doses, and there is some repetition that I felt was unnecessary for the DVDs (though it may have been appropriate for the original broadcast, with longer intervals between episodes).

Tantalizing foot.age but presented so minisculy at some times, it bogs down...one battle after another. It took me several weeks to watch.cs However, for historical content, should be recommended watching for any student group or classroom .. college or high school especially. It would be interesting to know how he chose the towns he did. :) The pace could have been a bit quicker without seeming sacreligious to the persons whose stories are immortalized in this film.
