Tchaikovsky (1970)
Member Rating:
Innokenty Smotkunovsky essays the title role in the Russian production Tchaikovsky (released in some areas as Tchaikowski). Avoiding the erotic sensationalism of Kenneth Russell's The Music Lovers, the film illustrates how Tchaikovsky's life and work were virtually one in the same. Among the many highlights are the re-creations of the composer's ballets, brilliantly performed by Maya Plisetskaya. Hollywood-based composer Dmitri Tiomkin who arranged the music for Tchaikovsky and the picture itself earned Academy Award nominations. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If you are looking for a definitive movie on Tchaikovsky's life this isn't it. You are better off watching Ken Russell's "The Music Lovers." However, this was stunningly beautiful in its cinematography, costumes and settings. Since it was filmed in Russia there are no cheasy Hollywood sets. It's all the real thing. The actor who plays Tchaikovsky is the most eerily spot-on look-alike ever seen. Even his mannerisms, or what you would think T's mannerisms were (after reading countless books about him) are right on. There are frequent artsy-fartsy moments, but all in all it was mesmerizing.

Wow! This movie about Tchaikowsky was slow, slow, slow. Very little of his music - just one boring scene after another. Example - about five minutes to look at birch trees in the snow.

True to facts account of the composer's life, his loves and his feelings. A clear focus on his creative live, in the context of his personal life, not the other way around.
