Maude was but one of the lengthy series of outstanding situation comedies produced by Norman Lear in the 70s, that began with All In The Family. Maude Findlay was Edith Bunker's better off, 4 times married, ultra-liberal cousin from tony Westchester, NY. Though Lear himself was politically liberal and the show was created during a time of liberal ascendency, the character of Maude is not idealized. She is often portrayed as something of a knee-jerk liberal with the emphasis on jerk. A good example is one of the very first episodes of Season 1 where Maude invites a bunch of well-heeled fellow liberals to a fundraising party for a "Black militant" leader that was obviously modelled on Leonard Berstein's famous radical chic party for the Black Panthers. They don't make tv like this anymore. They can't make em like this anymore.

Watched Maude with my 19 year old daughter, it was very enlightening to her. She appreciated the frankness and unpolitical correctness. Bea Arthur is wonderful as was expected.

I love maude, she is a sassy tell it like it is lady and I love watching her, Bea Aruthur was great in this role and as dorothy in golden girls, she was a truly wonderful and talented actress.
