State of Grace (1990)

State of Grace (1990)
Member Rating:
This directorial effort from Phil Joanou stars Sean Penn as an Irish-American undercover cop working the Hell's Kitchen beat. Penn is ostensibly on a sentimental journey to his old neighborhood. Actually he's been assigned to infiltrate a criminal gang led by Ed Harris, the brother of Sean's best friend Gary Oldman. Penn suffers the requisite honor vs. duty anguish when he renews his childhood romance with Harris' sister Robin Wright. State of Grace would have had more clout had it been more clear as to time and place: it's supposedly set in the 1990s, but the attitudes and behavior are pure 1970s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Modern day Irish gangsters. Excellant performances by Sean Penn, Ed Harris & Gary Oldman. Sean's real life wife Robin play's his girl in this one. Not a great script but a lot of great acting here. Great shoot-em-up at the end! Happy St. Paddy's day everyone.

Why this movie did not a win, best picture, a best actor, best everything is very hard to believe. The movie is set in NYC most colorful local, Hells Kitchen. The cast is amazing, as they are able to make you believe this might have actually happened. The plot may not be new. However, the delivery of the plot is new. I did not realize that Ed Harris; a brother was Gary Oldman. Oldman is like a camellia, he can hide in a part and you never know that he is there. This is a can’t miss movie that belongs in your Queue and in any serious DVD collection. The movie never gets dated. You will watch this one more then once. Here are a few movies that are also worth your consideration..”ROUNDERS”.”PRIMAL FEAR” “CINDERELLA MAN” “PI”“AMERICAN HISTORY X”“THE BOONDOCK SAINTS”“WONDERLAND”“DONNIE DARKO”“LEWIS BLACK LIVE ON BROADWAY”“BOUND”“THE 25th HOUR”and “BLACK HAWK DOWN”
