Return of the Magnificent Seven (1966)
Member Rating:
The first of two sequels to The Magnificent Seven (1960), this bloody western featured only Yul Brynner from the original picture's all-star cast. Once again, the residents of a pastoral Mexican village become enslaved by a maniacal brute, this time the insane rancher Lorca (Emilio Fernandez), who has corralled a small army of 50 gunmen to intimidate the citizenry into building a church in memory of his son. Chico (now played by Julian Mateos), an original member of the seven gunslingers from the first film, hears of the villagers' plight and sends for Chris Adams (Brynner), who rounds up another lucky seven shootists from various places of ill-repute (including prison). The new bunch, which now includes Warren Oates and Claude Akins, storms the storm, intending to restore order. This film was, in turn, followed by a pair of further sequels, Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) and The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Return of the Magnificent Seven is okay for die hard fans of western shoot 'em ups without character development getting in the way. Yul Brynner, Robert Fuller, Claude Akins and Warren Oates give it their gritty best. However, Cohen's script and Kennedy's direction gives them little flint to strike sparks with. Those who experienced the unforgettable original with its perfect cast, unfortunately, will not find the same polished diamond in this one.

After seeing this film, I've finally come to a decision about both "Magnificent Seven" and "Seven Samurai" ... those films were both too long. Why is that important? Because, in both the previous cases, reading the book would be better (reading is always better than watching ... especially, if the watching takes just as long as the reading. It's always much more satisfying and rewarding to spend a few days reading through an entire book ... when the book comes to the screen, it can't be too long; otherwise, it just takes time, and you have to spend time in a discussion group to talk about the film.) This story follows the first film almost exactly; but it gets right to the action! So, if you haven't seen either of the first two movies I mentioned, read "Seven Samurai", but watch this one.
