Member Rating:
Acclaimed film director Sydney Pollack took a five-year break from the realms of fiction to assemble a lovingly crafted tribute to longtime friend and acclaimed architect Frank Gehry in this documentary born from the sketches of its talented subject. A notoriously shy craftsman whose impressive body of work includes the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Ghery is shown working in his studio unobstructed as Pollack attempts to capture the very essence of the artist's bold works through use of film and digital video. Driven by an intimate but informal series of discussions between Ghery and Pollack, Sketches of Frank Gehry uses the subject of architecture as a launching point to discuss the creative process, and paints a fascinating portrait of how one humble man was able to create some of the world's most awe-inspiring structures. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is what a documentary should be - truthful, and interesting. Gehry proves to be not only an architect, but a sculptor of post-minimal inclinations. He designs by cutting and pasting bits of paper. His assistants then use special tools to convert them into computerized layouts. The results are fantastic.

What a wonderful insight to the life of a great architect and arist. I learnt so many new aspects and realised there is much more to Frank Gehry than Bilbao.

A kind of love/friendship letter from director Sydney Pollack to architect/artist Frank Gehry, SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY is, for this viewer at least, an eye-opening appreciation of someone whose work I thought I was familiar with but of which it turns out I had little idea. Visually, the movie is often stunning, with compositions that are lovely--and crisp, clear color photography that is breathtaking. (Gehry's sketches, on their own, are works of art; comparing them to his finished products is eye-opening.) This part of the movie might be expected; the "more" here is the many glimpses we get of Gehry speaking of his life and work, and the many other artists, critics, even Gehry's analyst--with one exception, all huge Gehry fans--who speak insightfully and incisively about the man and his art. It's been awhile since I encountered a movie with so much intelligent talk. It's a pleasure to listen to these people who are bright, concerned, have important things to say & say them well.
