Intelligent and well thought out psychological horror/drama. Leaves enough questions to keep you guessing and enough answers to keep you interested. Has no more disturbing moments than any other movie english/spanish of it's genre.

A "class" job in terms of cast, location, sets & sculpture, THIRTEEN CURSES--a terrible, misleading title for the American DVD market: "Thirteen Chimes" would have been far better--is a movie with a personality as split as that of its leading character. It may appear to be in the "supernatural" genre but possessing better-then-average psychological and familial bearings; in truth, it's ALL about psychology and family. Juan Diego Botto, one of Spain's best young leading men who seems willing to try anything ("Obaba," "Sobrevivire," "Asfalto," "Plenilunio") is joined by Luis Tosar, Marta Etura, Elvira Minguez, Rosa Alvarez and Laura Mana to form a first-rate ensemble. But director/co-writer Xavier Villaverde doesn't quite bring it all home, as good as are the atmosphere and concept of many portions along the way. (The father & son sculpting scene is memorable, ditto the dialog between Botto and Etura as they talk about the depressive's need for love.)
