This movie is a feast for the eyes. For a live action movie it is really well made. It reminds me of a Jim Henson movie with parts pulled from spirited away. The story is a bit slow and predictable, but the qualities of special affects make the movie.

At first I was nervous what Takashi Miike, a renown horror director would do in this genera. It suprised me be being very well done. There are some scenes that are pretty intense, but the creatures and effects are amazing. If you enjoy your fairy tales a little on the darker side and like Japanese folklore, this will be great for you. My only complaint is I think the ending could have been a little stronger. If they cut the last scene and let the one before be the end it would have fit. All in all, quite enjoyable.

If you combined "The Goonies", "The Lord of the Rings", the Muppets and Mardi Gras, that's what this movie would look like. This movie is sure to spark the imagination of many a thirteen year old during the summer. What raises eyebrows is that Takashi Miike directed this film. The acting, directing, cinematography, sound, special effects and costume design were excellent. The costume department must have burned the midnight oil for months creating nearly 90 unique characters. And this is probably the best role Chiaki Kuriyama has had since "Kill Bill Vol. 1". Best of all, the ending leaves an opening for a sequel. The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio option made excellent use of surround sound. As for extras, on Disc 1, there's two trailers for the movie, a "Stills Gallery", a "Yokai Character Profiles" feature containing stills of characters and trailers for three movies. The Special Features disk contains 2:59:45 hours of extras, but isn't worth adding to your queue. Definitely recommended.
