The Odessa File is set in Hamburg in the winter of 1963. Jon Voight plays Peter Miller, a German reporter who is investigating the whereabouts of missing Nazi war criminals. After reading the diary of a Holocaust survivor who has recently committed suicide, Miller goes on the trail of in-hiding SS officer Eduard Roschmann (Maximilian Schell). The reporter finds his investigation blocked by members of a secretive group called Odessa. With the help of Israeli activists, Miller persists in his search. Schell's sister Maria also appears in The Odessa File as Miller's mother, the widow of a German soldier.     I had seen this film many years ago. Jon Voight does a creditable job as a a very young german who by chance discovers the diary of an old jewish man from the death camps. This leads to an intriguing adventure in finding a nazi officer responsible for the death of many thousands of Jews. You almost feel these are the real people in this historical drama..Maximilian Schell as the evil nazi officer is very believable as well as a cameo part played by a very young Derek Jacobi..Maria Schell who plays Voights wife happen to be the sister of Maximilian. 31/2 stars

    This is a dated film but for those, like me, who love intrigue and hunting for evil-doers, it's sure to satisfy. Acting was topnotch. Maria Schell, who played Voight's mother in a very brief scene, did a remarkable job portraying a mother who had lived through very harsh events of the war. Patricia H.

    An important story. Many Nazis who perpetrated heinous crimes were never brought to justice. Maximilian Schell is convincing as the unrepentant, guiltless, unregretting Roschmann. He tries to "educate" Miller to appreciate that the major mission of the Nazis was to "purify" the human race in one of the most meaningful and dramatic moments of the movie. We need to be reminded that there are powerful organizations who keep that horrifying mission alive.
