This movie is certainly a must miss. The plot is extremely weak, and the far from dynamic characters make this predictable, cliche-ridden waste excrutiating to watch. I will give it one star for its effort to tackle a film idea not commonly attempted. However, save your time and hopefully we'll see in the future a writer or director who can put a unique angle on a story about child stardom.

...it was so unquestionably tame. i gave it one star for jennifer jason lee and eric stolz. otherwise i would have given it a dud. it was promising at first because it is a quirky film, but it doesn't go anywhere with that.

Resolutely unsentimental, CHILDSTAR was also probably un-releasable theatrically for that very reason (hence its straight-to-video designation). It refuses to pander to the usual schmaltzy version of kids, parents, Hollywood and feel-good. Its also a little sloppy in its moviemaking technique: not always the best continuity, and featuring not particularly realistic human beings (leaving someone you remotely care about to languish on the highway with a major head wound? Come on). Worth a rent, it's often clever, dark fun--but not nearly as fun or funny as the ultimate Hollywood movie-movie of the past few years "The Last Shot." It's also full of fine performances. Canada's Don McKellar (the brilliant "Last Night") directs, co-writes and stars, along with Jennifer Jason Leigh and the titular Mark Rendall (who's very good!).
