A man struggling to save the life of another finds himself drawn into a strange netherworld he didn't know existed in this stylish thriller. Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) is a psychiatrist living in New York City with his girlfriend, Lila Culpepper (Naomi Watts), who was once one of his patients. However, it's another one of his patients who becomes the focus of his obsessions when Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling), a disturbed young man whom Foster took over from a colleague, announces during a session that he intends to commit suicide in three days, on his 21st birthday. Sam takes the threat quite seriously and tries to track down Henry, who seems to have disappeared. Sam speaks to a number of Henry's friends and acquaintances -- his mother (Kate Burton), the man he claimed was his father, Dr. Leon Patterson (Bob Hoskins), a waitress who regularly served Henry at the coffee shop where she works (Elizabeth Reaser), and his former therapist Dr. Beth Levy (Janeane Garofalo). As Sam talks to people in Henry's circle, he finds he's learning more about himself than the man he's supposed to save, and he begins to drift into an emotional netherworld where the supposedly dead and the living cross paths. Stay was directed by Marc Forster, who had previously enjoyed breakthrough hits with two very different films, Monster's Ball and Finding Neverland. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I've been in a serious accident and lost consciousness in the middle of a 4 way traffic light. I was only out for 30 secs but thought that the whole accident was a dream! When I passed out, I immediately woke up in my home and proceeded to walk around and do my day to day things for a full hour before the lights and sounds of the intersection began to break in to what I thought was "reality." When I woke up on the street, covered in blood and unable to move, I was very confused. Wasn't the accident the dream? Wasn't the real world where I just was? But no, just like this movie in which a young man is fatally injured in a car wreck.. his mind begins to interperate the people and sounds around him in a dream-like state. Several minutes turns to several days of sureal experiences in which fragments of reality are present, but seem very confusing due to the sureal nature of his dream-like existence.

I was actually very surprised and really enjoyed this movie. Everyone's just been coming up with FIGHT CLUB (dual identity) and SIXTH SENSE (already dead) knock offs since the day they came out. It's good to finally see a film branch out and throw people off in the end, with something more realistic. At first I thought the acting was a little off (expecting more of a reaction to certain things), but when the plot was revealed, it totally made sense and came together. Spoiler Alert: I think it is incredible how they quoted HAMLET the 'tragic hero' in a story where his entire family died and yet, it didn't give away the ending. Very poetic.

I was not impressed. Wasted 90 minutes of my life.
