Nicknamed the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players," the original cast of Saturday Night Live ignited a comedy revolution with their mix of irreverent characters and satirical impressions of political figures and pop culture icons. From the premiere of this groundbreaking sketch comedy show on October 11, 1975, live from historic Studio 8H in New York City's Rockefeller Center, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner launched themselves into instant stardom and were often referred to as "The Beatles of Comedy." Created by Lorne Michaels over three decades ago, Saturday Night Live has had the cultural impact and relevance that few shows can claim. Nowhere else can you see the complete first season of SNL, featuring hosts George Carlin, Rob Reiner, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor, Elliott Gould, Candice Bergen, or original musical performances by Simon & Garfunkel, ABBA, Patti Smith, Jimmy Cliff, and Carly Simon. Now I remember! Season 1 of SNL wasn't funny till after they got their formula right. They were highly experimental continually exploring new frontiers in off-the-wall humor. Their writers were high and spaced-out so they bombed a lot. Even in their heyday, they were only entertaining about 20 percent of the time. We watched SNL as bored and broke teenagers with nothing better to do. We waited patiently for the hilarious 10 or 20 percent that made it all worth while. Now I'm 50 and don't have the time. For my temperament, I think I'll stick to "The Best Of..." DVDs.

We knew some of this stuff was bad even in '75. The Muppets were never funny, the bees weren't very funny. There was some crappy music that was seen as cutting edge. After you've listened to two songs by Janis Ian on the first show you'll want to take an overdose. That said, there are still some grand moments. Andy Kaufman does his Mighty Mouse routine on the first show, Simon and Garfunkle reunite on the second show, Belushi does his Joe Cocker imitation on the third show. I plan on watching the first few seasons to see how the show matured. I know that there are some great musical acts coming up in the second and third seasons and that Chevy Chase will scram and Bill Murray will show up.

It would not be funny unless you have already seen it, or rather-lived it. Jokes about 'president' Ford just aren't the same. It's nice to see how SNL evolved and some of it is funny still. The old music performances are kinda cool.
