This is a well designed traditional production. Overall the cast is excellent. Troyanos is a fetching and mellifluous Venus. Her performance alone would be cause to recommend this production. Regrettably, Cassilly, as Tannhauser, is a disappointment. His voice has a hard, constricted quality which I found unappealing. However, his vocal deficiencies are offset by some pretty good acting. Marton makes an appealing Elisabeth. Chorus and orchestra, of course, perform well. N. B. I rented this DVD again and for what ever reason I did not find Cassily's vocal renderings quite as off putting as I had in the initial viewing.
