Widely considered to be an expensive failure, Waterworld was an epic vehicle for Kevin Costner, who starred in and co-produced the film, with his friend Kevin Reynolds as director. It was based on a 1986 screenplay by Peter Rader and cost an estimated $235 million, more than any film in history up to that time. Costner eventually fired Reynolds and directed the last few scenes himself. The story was filmed in Hawaii, using several artificial islands, and is set in an apocalyptic future, after global warming has melted the polar ice caps and flooded civilization. The Mariner (Costner) is one of the human beings who has adapted by growing gills. The survivalist lives on a boat on which he is growing a precious tomato plant. He tries to sell the plant and its dirt to the residents of an artificial island built of industrial waste. They imprison him when they discover that he's a mutant with gills. But the island is attacked by the Smokers, a group of oil-guzzling raiders on jet skis headed by the Deacon (Dennis Hopper). The Mariner escapes with Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her daughter Enola (Tina Majorino). Back at sea, the Smokers repeatedly attack, using planes and boats, until they kidnap Enola. Enola's back is tattooed with a map showing how to get to Dryland, the last unflooded area on Earth. But Deacon, who needs to get to Dryland to replenish the Smokers' oil supply, can't immediately decipher it. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Just like everybody else I don't understand why this movie was literaly destroyed by the critic. For me, it's one of the best movie ever made.

I'm not sure why Kevin Costner received so muck flak for this movie. This should have moved him into an entire new area of movie 'star'. His physical performance was inspiring. The detail of the sets and all the costumes and assorted props is amazing. Yes, it is MAD MAX on the water - and yes, I loved MAD MAX too!

Kevin Costner's boat in the opening scene was very creative; Jeanne Tripplehorn's butt in the confrontation scene is very shapely. Those two scenes were the highlight's for me. Dennis Hopper's campy Deacon was perfect. The movie's ending seemed to suggest that a sequel could have been planned. I'd like to see a sequel that pits "gilled" humans against the non-mutated humans. Perhaps M. Night Shyamalan could pick up where Costner left off.

Not only on of Costner's best roles its also one of my favorite Dennis Hopper flicks (he's just in awesome "Hopper" form as the twisted bad guy leader- great laughs!). This movie was unfairly judged becuase of the expense and the battles of the multiple directors & writers (Costner even stepped in and became a producer to see the movie get finished in a way he believed would be a good action story - and he was right!). This is one of those movies that entertains and keeps you guessing till the end. I still think there's more story to tell (I'm giving thought to writing it myself because I want more. Anybody else want to help me plunge into debt- we'll make BP pay for it !- )

Classic to me as it has that One man quest. Wanting to be left alone but has to deal with helping others. Has it all figured out for himself but when others get involved he has to take other risk and chances. Much Like Mad Max movies. A Must see!

Blu-ray version would not play on my Samsung BD-P1200, even with the 4/21/10 firmware update. Always did like the movie though.

This story was way too drawn out. There wasn't enough character development or foreshadowing for my taste. Instead a lot of people staring at each other, as if this is supposed to tell you something about what they are thinking or feeling. Classic plot line where everything feels expected after its happened. Save yourself some time and skip this one.
