Academy-award winning director Tom Hooper's adaptation of the beloved musical Les Miserables makes no major changes to the original's plot. The story follows former prisoner Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who, after being released from the watchful eye of police officer Javert (Russell Crowe), is unable to find work because of his status as an ex-convict. He eventually steals from a local church, but when apprehended, the priest claims that Valjean was given the valuables. This triggers a change in Valjean, and he constructs a new identity for himself as a pillar of society and a local businessman. Years later, he adopts a young girl named Cosette, whose mother Fantine (Anne Hathaway), a former employee of his, became a prostitute and died a horrible death in the gutters after being fired. As the years progress and the French Revolution begins to foment, a grown Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) falls for a passionate revolutionary named Marius (Eddie Redmayne), while Javert begins to close in again on Valjean's secret past. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

One of the truly transcendent plays of our time does not disappoint in this magnificent screen adaptation. Some scenes are simply stunning to behold, with pure, raw emotion. Anne Hathway's soliloquy is breathtaking, and she will surely clean-up in award season. Each cast member brings their own personal touch to what are some of the most famous characters in literary fiction. Not all performances are flawless, much like the characters they emulate, but it works to bring a very emotional and powerful experience to those who love the book and the play. Enjoy!

Everything from the makeup to costuming and acting was amazing. I hadn't realized going into the movie that the entire movie was sung and at first that threw me but within 15 minutes you forgot that and it really drew you into the movie. Some have beautiful voices, some average voices, but this also is fitting for the parts that the actors play. You can't help routing for the underdogs in the French Revolution and Jean Valjean. The movie climaxes and you just want to jump up and sing their fight song with them. The movie is well done and a must see. Definitely and academy winner!

Was slow developing and at three hours could stand some editing. Over all a good moie experience but consider Chicago a superior film musical By the way; Allan R, do you have any grasp of what makes for drama or story telling?

I was coming here to state my opinion that Tom Hooper's adaptation of the greatest musical ever written is the best movie I've ever seen (and I've seen a million or so), but now I'm slack-jawed over a 1-star review by ALLAN R that preceded me. Read it. Dear Allan: Victor Hugo's novel (now celebrating its 150th anniversary) has sold countless millions of copies, been adapted on film over 100 times starting in 1897, and has inspired countless millions to treat their fellow man just a little better than they did before they encountered Hugo's Jean Valjean. You apparently thought that there would be beer bongs, silicone jugs and car chases. No apologies will be offered that you were disappointed. I do believe that there is still an audience for a cultural experience that surpasses anything that has preceded it. It is SUBLIMELY acted, sung and directed, and I'll be watching it at least once a week for as long as I live. That's MY opinion. Allan R has his. See the movie. Decide.

I would have given my entire box of buttered popcorn and large Diet Coke to just ONCE hear these babbling idiots speak a normal sentence....rather than constantly hearing the HORRIBLE and PATHETIC singing by Jackman and Crowe ! I wanted to puke !! I gave it a 3-stars because of wardrobe and settings, which were superb.

Dark, dreary, and depressing. Watching this movie was like sitting through a 3-hour root canal except les entertaining. What is a classic piece of literature and music does not amuse here because there is little entertainment value of such poverty, squalor and injustice amplified by the big screen. The lives of these characters is so miserable what do they possibly have to sing about? Skip this film unless depression and misery is your thing.
