Candleshoe (1977) Reviews

Candleshoe (1977)
Member Rating:
Though she owns a large estate and is herself a noblewoman, Lady St. Edmund (Helen Hayes) is anything but rich. Indeed, if she cannot raise the money needed to pay taxes on the estate, she and the large crew of orphans she has taken in will be thrown out. Legend has it that one of her ancestors, a pirate, hid a substantial treasure in gold coins somewhere in the mansion. Lady St. Edmund has not lost sight of the legend, but neither has she found the coins. With the willing help of her children and her valet-of-all trades, Priory (David Niven), she is doing her plucky best to keep the wolf from the door. However, the thieving duo of Bundage and Grimsworthy (Leo McKern and Vivian Pickles) have decided to mount a search for the legendary loot themselves and have persuaded Casey (Jodie Foster), a waif from L.A., to pose as Lady St. Edmund's long-lost granddaughter and help find and steal the loot. This being a Disney production, one can be confident that good will somehow prevail. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Jodie Foster was a great actress back when she was a teenager,As she is today now as an adult. If you have not seen her act from this age,it is something that you will enjoy.

Expecting the typical Disney movie from the seventies, I came out of this wondering why it isn't up there with the Herbie, Apple Dumpling Gang and Witch Mountain movies of the era. Candleshoe is a wonderful film. It's funny, touching, and interesting. It's actually too short if you ask me, I could have handled another fifteen minutes or so. Anyway, this film is highly recommended. You'll never think of the size of eggs the same again.

My 4 daughters (8,6,3,3) watched this movie and enjoyed it. The Jodie Foster character learns some lessons about selfishness and looking out for others before herself. I was pleased we rented it.

Disney ginned out some awful movies between the time Walt died and Eisner came to prominence. This is not one of those bad movies. David Niven and Jodie Foster both did an excellent job in this family-friendly movie. Helen Hayes, as always, is class embodied. Both my kids loved this movie, as did I and my wife.

One of my favorites from childhood, it was just as delightful to watch with my children (boy and girl, 7 and 9). The acting is classic and the story line includes good humor, swash-buckling, and plenty of rooting for the good guys!

Old favorite of mine, introduced it to my two 7 year olds and my 5 year old. They all really enjoyed it. One of my 7 year olds told me it's her favorite movie.

Good family fare. Great acting. Storyline is as old as the hills, but a good rent if you're looking for a Disney you've never seen before.
