Joan Rivers launched her career as a standup comic in the early '60s, a time when female comedians were few and far between, and after several years of working nightclubs to unresponsive audiences, she was booked on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1965 and soon became one of the most successful comedy acts in the nation. Since then, Rivers has hosted several TV talk shows, written best-selling books, directed a feature film, launched a line of jewelry, and kept up a busy schedule of personal appearances, determined to hold on to her stardom regardless of the fickle winds of show business. Filmmakers Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg followed Rivers through a typically eventful year in her life, and in Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, they offer a look at the woman behind the laughter as she struggles to stay in the spotlight, works on new material, launches a one-woman show in the United Kingdom that doesn't fare as well as she hopes, takes a chance as a participant on a reality TV show, and ponders her career in show business at the age of 75. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A very revealing portrait of the 75 year-old actress/comedienne as well as show business in general. Very entertaining, interesting, and moving documentary.

This is worth a watch, although I found most of her life today sad the way she tries to stay busy constantly, like she's trying to fill a void in her life. She looks creepy without her makeup.

This is one tough broad. The shot of her at the beginning with no make-up on, took guts. You are aware at that point that her public face is like a mask. Her obsession with plastic surgery is pathetic and I felt sad after watching how she lives her life. I hope she is able to find some peace and acceptance of her real self some day. And, someone please tell her she does not need to use gutter language to be funny. A very eye opening and interesting movie. She is quite a gal - - the likes of which we will never see again in our lifetime I would wager.

Joan Rivers, is the funniest woman on the planet. I love her. Seeing her show herself without make-up is a wonderful thing. She should be proud of her fantastic aging. However....there is a cut-off '''age''' when using the F word and C word, and the P word is creepy. I know Joan wants to 'keep doors open' for comics as she ages. But calling her daughter a 'f---- c----' for not taking the cover of Playboy job is wrong.

A very well done and entertaining documentary of a comedy legend. I always enjoy films that show the behind the scenes of show business especially comedy, so this is very interesting.

I think a lot of viewers will be surprised by how human and vulnerable Joan Rivers can be. Well worth your time. And, on a personal note, I thought Annie Duke deserved to win "Celebrity Apprentice", but after viewing this documentary, it is nice to know that a trailblazer's career was ultimately relaunched after being victorious. Would Johnny Carson have been so indignant towards Joan Rivers and her departure from the "Tonight Show" if she had been a man?? I think not. Donald Trump did one right thing: he gave a gutsy broad another chance in a very tough business!

Joan Rivers hates to be called an icon. Why? Watch this surprising, entertaining, endearing documentary about this workaholic who, for whatever reason, was not given a wider audience nor an Oscar nomination for best Doc of 2010. It's just a great film.
