In 2008, California voters were asked to weigh in on Proposition 8, a ballot measure that would amend the state constitution to specify that marriage was legal only between a man and a woman, effectively ending the drive to bring gay marriage to California. Proposition 8 was passed, the first time California voters had agreed to limit civil rights by law, and among its most vocal supporters were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints, better known as the Mormons. Mormon groups contributed 22 million dollars to advertising campaigns in support of Prop. 8, and some Mormon activists took part in inflammatory disinformation campaigns about the possible effects of making gay marriage legal. Filmmakers Reed Cowan and Steven Greenstreet examine the role of the Mormon Church in the battle against same-sex marriage in the documentary 8: The Mormon Proposition, as well as examining Mormon doctrine on homosexuality (including church-approved programs to "cure" homosexuality), suicide rates among gay teens in Mormon communities, and misleading comments from Mormon leaders on the impact of Prop. 8 on religious freedoms. 8: The Mormon Proposition received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Right on! God does not condemn, only organized religion does! This film delivers a very important message and needs to be seen by everyone! The Mormon Church is leading a crusade filled with hatred and it is depicted quite honestly in this well done film. Please boycott supporters of Prop 8!

Marriage was originally conceived by humans to acertain a relationship between people or families associated with ownership and property not God. Religious institutions adopted the concept and redefined it as a holy contract between a man and a woman. Bottom line....Civil marriage is not religious marriage therefore this is a civil issue not a moral one. Religion should not have any say on who can and cannot get married if they do so under a civil platform only.

Vile and toxic. Not worth the time. And it's completely laughable that this 'movie' has picked up any distribution or interest.

This is an amazing film and really shines a light on the way Mormons sought to eliminate the freedom for non-Mormon homosexuals to marry the people they love in California. So much for "free agency" and "free will" You have freedom unless you try to do something the Mormons don't like. Then they will find a way to legislate away your rights. I'm grateful this film was made.

I have to laugh at some of these comments. Yes I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I have extended family members that are gay. Yes we believe that homosexuality is a sin in the sight of God. It doesn't mean that we hate or dislike the person that does it. The Lord loves ALL and we teach that we should to. This movie is definitely anti literature about our Church. It is not what we teach or practice. Anyone who has really studied and listened to what we believe knows that this is propaganda. It makes me sad that a lot of people will watch this biased film.

For 5,000 years, EVERY culture and EVERY religion - not just Christianity - has defined marriage as a contract between men and women. There is no reason to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease 2% of our population. This is not a political issue, it is a moral issue The film fail to mention some important facts. First, Utah does not have the highest suicide rate in the country. That honor goes to Alaska. Utah is usually 15 or 16. Second, the movie ignore the enormous influence the Catholic Church, through the California Catholic Conference, were huge supporters of Prop 8.I am bothered by the films methodology of quoting leaders out of context. Filming the the church leaders in dark flat grays and showing them giving talks that had nothing to do with homosexuality then insinuating those talks were about the issue at hand was disingenuous at best.

The Mormon church spent a FORTUNE to overturn gay marriage in California. They extorted the money from their deluded congregants to fund a campaign of half-truths and outright lies. They did all this as secretly as possible, creating front groups such as NOM (National Organization for Marriage). All these truths are laid out clearly in this excellent documentary, and it is an important film for everyone to watch. The LDS church is a disgrace, and should have their tax exempt status removed (as should all churches). The negative reviews of this film that Mormons have written here are more lies...it is a very well-done and thoroughly researched film. Consider the source when you read these reviews, and DO watch this film.
