This fantasy action-comedy from Japan focuses on a group of college students who get mixed up in the world of Horumu - a fighting competition where people call upon spirits to do battle for them. Supernatural combat might not be the best fit for freshman Akira Abe, but when he falls in love with classmate Kyoko, joining the school's Horumu team, the Kyoto University Azure Dragons, is the best way he can think of to get close to her. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi
This is a bizarre, but harmless movie where not a whole lot happens. Despite what the synopsis states, there's more cuteness than comedy as there's very little that came across as funny. As for action, the battling spirits do inflict a fair amount of brutality on each other, but nothing you wouldn't see on weekday cartoons and apparently nothing that can't be healed by sticking raisins in their mouths. The target demographic is probably high school adolescents. The acting and directing were very good. The CGI was excellent. The 5.1ch Surround audio option made minor use of surround sound. As for extras, there's two trailers for the movie and trailers for ten other movies. Recommended.
I thought the whole movie was weird. It's about these little animated creatures called Horumo who battle depending on their masters' movements while using a language called Oni (both the weird part). Only the members of the club can see these creatures. The only thing I liked was the scenery & background of the whole movie which portrays the old city of Kyoto. Temples, gardens, geisha...etc.
