Giorgio Moroder re-edited Fritz Lang's 1926 science fiction classic, tinted it and added his own score. The soundtrack also features musicians Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Billy Squier and Freddie Mercury. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
What Moroder did to Lang's timeless masterpiece left it walking bowlegged but, in effect, did it a GREAT favor by bringing the forgotten (at the time) film back into the public consciousness. As a result, in the years since, "Metropolis" has undergone a series of RAVISHING restorations, and is back to us as the full, stunning vision that audiences saw in 1926. But if your preference is to see it as an '80s music video with music that's just WRONG (save for Freddie's 'Radio Gaga'), then check this out.
The original American release was cut, chopped and hacked down to a shorter and more confusing film. Most importantly the story line parts were cut out of the original American film version release making the film incoherent. But Europe always enjoyed the original film uncut version and people loved the movie because it made sense and was not hacked and edited by brain dead American editors. This version of the film has the original scenes added back in, although the old film was found in bad shape they managed to some what restore it and add a quality updated soundtrack. This movie was made in the pinnacle of the silent film era. A very good film made even better and now restored. Although it is still missing some footage, copies made of this film were either destroyed by War or the ravages of time. This version is the only known full length version of this film to survive today. This new footage was found in Europe and restored here the way it was suppose to be watched. A must see.
