In the tradition of This Is Spinal Tap, producer/ director/ star Tim Robbins' Bob Roberts is a satire disguised as a documentary. Robbins plays the titular Roberts, a wealthy, well-connected young man running for a senatorial seat in Pennsylvania. On the surface, Roberts is an ingratiating glad-hander, a sincere believer in the restoration of such intangibles as national pride, family values, etc. But the longer Roberts is followed about by documentary filmmaker Brian Murray, the more we become aware that the candidate is a textbook case of cynicism and contempt. Only Giancarlo Esposito, a reporter for an underground newspaper, is willing to dig beneath Roberts' veneer--a habit that leads to the film's ironic conclusion. Several well-known actors make cameo appearances as TV commentators, notably Tim Robbins' longtime partner Susan Sarandon. Bob Roberts started out as a Tim Robbins-directed short subject for the TV series Saturday Night Live, then was expanded into a $4 million feature. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Let's see - Bob Roberts is a gun-running, S&L-stealing, drug-dealing, hypocritical, manipulative, rich,song-writing,Wall Street-loving politician who leads a band of equally cynical aides while being showered with adulation from a stupid, easily-led, corn-fed, religious, hero-worshiping bunch of yahoos in suits and ties. Luckily for us, there is an idealistic band of artists, tv personalities, and journalists who see through his personae and stand ready to defend our country. Alas, they are defeated in the end. Boo-freakin'-hoo. Made in the style of a documentary from the BBC, the objective arbiter decides that - YES! - he doesn't like Bob very much, so all the good little liberals who like this movie will feel vindicated and have their world-view affirmed. Hooray! What an offensive piece of garbage. The only thing that could have made it worse would have been to have cameos by the usual suspects - Susan Sarandon, John Cusack, etc. No, wait! They did have cameos. My bad.

I can't say I 'liked' the movie, but I have to give it 4 stars. The movie is extremely well done. (special props to Jack Black as a follower of Bob Roberts who is almost Hitler-Youthian in his fanaticism.) It's also incredibly depressing, because, way back in 1992, it all too accurately predicted the rise of mindless sound bite politics and the brand of conservatism that sees debate as unpatriotic and disagreement as treason. It's almost like the movie gave Fox News a roadmap on how to dominate national political discourse - NOT a result Tim Robbins would have wanted, I'm sure. This movie is satire - when did it become a way of life in our political discourse?

This movie was compared to This is Spinal Tap; believing that was my first mistake. My second mistake was watching it for the first hour, hoping that it would be funny. Save the space on your queue; 1 star is an over estimate for this incredibly boring, non-innovative film.

Tim Robbins wrote and directed this movie. I guess that should have been a clue for me for what to expect. Basically if you are a liberal in this movie you are concerned, intelligent, sincere, humane, honest, and wanting to do good for you fellow man. If you are conservative you are the opposite of all of those things. Then on top of that you are a mind numb Christian to boot. I found the stereotyping to be really offensive and it detracted from a plot that was done second order to whatever political message Robbins was trying to accomplish. No doubt if you are a liberal you will find this movie very satisfying. I would not have seen this if I could have read a review like the one I am writing.
