The true story of a young girl held captive by her insane caretaker comes to life in this disturbing film from Ella Enchanted director Tommy O'Haver. Hard Candy's Ellen Page stars as Sylvia Likens a teenager who, along with her sister, is left to live temporarily with seemigly-mild-mannered housewife Gertrude Baniszewski, played by Catherine Keener. Unfortunately for Sylvia, Gertrude soon snaps and holds her hostage in harsh conditions until the former's eventual death. Bradley Whitford costars as the prosecutor tasked with trying the case against Baniszewski. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi
This was a really good movie - although it was VERY disturbing and at times very hard to watch. It's based on the true story of the 1965 killing of Sylvia Likens. (Although the movie showed some horrific scenes, the actual story was even more horrible - the movie only touched on a few facts and only a few acts of torture) Sylvia was killed and tortured by single mother Gertrude Baniszewski, her six children and neighborhood kids. The acting in this movie was also very good and very believing, although I HATED Ellen Page in Juno (just because the movie was aweful) she was brilliant in An American Crime and Catherine Keener is always awesome!
This movie is amazing. The acting is great- i never thought much of ellen page but i was utterly awed. This movie is so sad and disturbing- mostly because its true (the court scene was taken from the actual court testimony). However, it's not just a drama; theres mystery and a little suspense. I highly recommend this! You'll keep thinking about it over and over even after the movie has stopped.
This movie is like a Terrible train wreck you can't stop watching. The movie was nicely done, and brings to light the horror of what goes on in America. But I think I could have done without ever watching it. This movie truely made my blood pressure rise.
