This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. The highlight of the film's 212 minutes is its now-legendary chariot race, staged largely by stunt expert Yakima Canutt. Ben-Hur's Oscar haul included Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for Heston, and Best Supporting Actor for Welsh actor Hugh Griffith as an Arab sheik. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

How can one explain to people who are to young to remember films without all the computer generated action how GREAT this movie actually is? Anyone? This is simply ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER!!! Actors actually had to act in EVERY scene. There were no computers to do any of the work! It makes me sad to know that entire generations have never even heard of this film and never will. I think it can stand up to computer generated action / short attention span scenes of today. NO it doesn't need to be a remake. A lot of people think this is a religious film, and while it does take place during the time of Christ, it is not about Christ. It is about a man who, through the course of his life, is introduced to the concept of Christ. However, it is truly just a peripheral thing and not the actual subject of the movie. The movie itself is actually full of political intrigue, betrayal, love, family, loss, cruelty, revenge, and ultimately… well I will save the end for you to see.

Review 418: classic sandal & chariot epic overshadowed by the dated acting of the once relevant Heston in a 3 1/2 hour story about the vengeful world of Rome during Jesus' time in a G rated 11 award winning tale.

What a great classic movie. You can read other reviews for details, but very well done considering the era. Although I thought it dragged a bit and could have been shortened to possibly 2.5 hours instead of 3.5, it was still enjoyable from beginning to end.

I ordered this movie on a lark. I wanted to see what the hubbub was about regarding the relationship between Messala and Judah. (Trying to be as objective as possible, and taking the medium into account, there was definitely something going on between those two, more than wrestling, hunting, and spear-throwing (and talking about how close their spears were...)) I think Heston is panned as an actor because he's linked with an American ideal like John Wayne and Ronald Reagan that has fallen into disfavor. Speaking as somewhat of a Liberal, I think it's tragic that Hollywood has decided to create a new blacklist that also condems actors largely based on their political beliefs. But perhaps the idea of freedom is only for those with "the accepted" ideas. That being said, I cannot imagine Brad Pitt or Nick Cage or Edward Norton or Denzel Washington playing Ben Hur like Charlton Heston did. That man had a power deep inside him and the voice of Moses. Wow.

I saw this movie as a child. It's one of those movies that you know Good conquers evil. Being a faithful Christian, I'm also grateful for those old movies that didn't hesitate to drawn the viewer's imagination to think about Lord Jesus Christ's impact on His world and continues into our own. I just wish there was more movies like this one.

When I rented this, I thought it was going to be a big epic war movie like Spartacus. It was more a story of one man's life and Jesus, but it was still pretty interesting. Seemed awfully long at 3.5 hours. It's worth watching though - the chariot race is pretty impressive.
