Actor and author Richard E. Grant made his directorial debut with this period comedy drama inspired by his own experiences growing up in colonial Africa in the sixties. Ralph Compton (Zachary Fox) is the 11-year old son of Harry (Gabriel Byrne), the minister of education in the British-controlled African nation of Swaziland. While Harry is a likeable and well-connected man, his marriage to Lauren (Miranda Richardson) is on shaky ground, and when he learns she's been having an affair with one of his best friends, she leaves him and he begins drinking heavily. Harry sends Ralph to boarding school when things start to get unpleasant, and after two years he returns home to discover that some changes have been made. Ralph (now played by Nicholas Hoult) finds that his father is still drinking, but seems a more relaxed and better adjusted man -- and has just remarried, having tied the knot with Ruby (Emily Watson), a former stewardess from America. Ralph naturally resists Ruby's presence in the house, but the two become close, as Ruby indicates that she understands Ralph better than anyone else (and he senses the same). Meanwhile, the British start to withdraw from Swaziland. Wah-Wah received its world premiere at the 2005 Edinburgh Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie makes you wonder if anyone ever had a normal childhood and I can relate, just in a different way. It is any wonder any of us grow up even half normal after going through some of the things this kid went through IE: Seeing your mother make it with some other guy right in front of you. The movie deals with cheating, backstabbing, alchoholism and death. The movie goes pretty slow but since I rented it, I was able to take breaks. Worth one watch.

Much better then I expected - also a bit "deeper" "sadder" then expected. If your looking for a "true-blue" comedy and lots of laughs for the evening this is not the movie. It has it's moments but really deals with addiction - family - growing up - divorce all that wonderful dysfunctional stuff we all live with!!!! Worth the watch

Very sad movie. I would have given it more stars if it wasn't so depressing. The acting was excellent and the story quite interesting. I like it but you have to be in the mood for this type of movie.

Wah-Wah was a surprise. I had expected an average film perhaps a somewhat pleasant film as it has only a 3-star rating. However, it is much better than that. It is the story about an adolescent boy growing up in the 1960s in the British Crown Colony of Swaziland in South East Africa just prior of that country's independence. The film centers on the boy and his dysfunctional family's tragic disintegration and aftermath, followed by its recovery. It is filmed against the backdrop of striking African scenery. The film is also an extraordinary insight into British colonial life. The term "Wah-Wah" refers to the boy's mockery of the petty expressions that the British colonials used in daily life. Beautifully written with superb actors wonderfully directed, Wah-Wah depicts a depth of emotion from tragedy to humor; it is an uplifting and magnificent film, a true pleasure to watch.

wonderful film-great photography-good acting-but the story is the real draw--deals with a life's sticky situations and real life problems compassionately, with humor and feeling and I sat really in the story the whole way through!! great!! well done!!!!

Nothing to get excited about, probably the best part was some of the scenery shots in Africa. A slow plodding movie, this is rated in the COMEDY genre which is ABSOLUTELY FALSE. they should fire the people who miscatagorize movies, we wanted fun and all we got was sadness.

*SPOILERS* One key identifier I use to help me decide if a movie is working well for me is whether I feel some emotion when a main character dies--sadness, relief, worry, anger, anything. When a character in this movie died, my main emotion was "Good, that probably means it is nearly over." There was potential for a better movie in this one, but it wasn't realized. Would have liked to see a stronger inclusion of Swaziland and the local environment in the film. The setting is Africa but with only minor changes, it could just as well have been Paris in the same time frame.
