Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) Reviews

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
Member Rating:
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (Brave Heart Will Take the Bride) was a huge hit in India, and won all the major Filmfare Awards. It was also the film that catapulted Shahrukh Khan to Bollywood superstardom, and it was the first of several successful pairings of Khan and Kajol. Khan plays Raj, a likeably goofy rich Indian boy, brought up in London, who's had everything handed to him in life. Kajol is Simran, a proper Indian girl who also lives in London. Her stern father (Amrish Puri) has arranged for her to go to back to his sorely missed homeland in Punjab to marry the son of an old friend. Simran persuades the old man to let her go off on a month-long trip to Europe with her girlfriends before she weds. On the trip, Simran meets Raj, and naturally they don't get along at first. He humiliates her with his pranks, and she refuses to loosen up. Then they get stranded together, get drunk together, sing and dance together, and begin to develop feelings for each other. They return to London, each hoping the other will express his/her love. They part, and when Simran's father overhears her telling her mother (Farida Jalal) about Raj, he gets angry and demands that they leave for India immediately. But Raj follows them there, determined to win over Simran's father and take Simran as his bride. He ingratiates himself with the dimwitted groom, Kuljit (Parmeet Sethi), and enters the household as his friend. Things get even more complicated when Kuljit's family mistakenly believes that Raj is interested in the groom's sister, and they begin to plan a double wedding. The film was the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra, and the hit soundtrack was composed by the writing team Jatin-Lalit. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

I watched this movie with subtitle and still loved it. I didn't get lost in translation! It starts out at a slow paced, but once they get on the train, the movie starts. The movie had romance, comedy, and drama, with beautiful music, what more can you ask for. I had friends and family watch the movie and they loved it. Shahrukh Khan is a great actor. He can be goofy geeky one minute and yet your night in shinning armor the next.

Shahrukh Khan and Kojol show their best performance in this movie. Every thing from the music to their wardrobe gets 5 stars. If you see this movie you won't be disappointed.

Yes the music is old and the first half of the movie could have been condensed into about 20 minutes, but I still love the movie. Fast forward the songs if you don't like the music.

Great acting from Shah Rukh and Kajol. For the people who said they didn't like the music obviously don't know what great music is. The melody, REAL instruments, compositon, lyrics, and singing from this soundtrack is pure amazing. Jatin-Lalit were great.

Sharookh makes the film watchable. He has charisma and I gather a large amount of intelligence to deliberately play such a one dimensional character. The plot and character motivations are totally predictable but if you have about 2.5-3 hours to kill with nothing better to do, this won't be the worst mistake you've made, as Bollywood films go.

I'm sorry but I had to stop it from playing. I didn't get through first 10 minutes of it and turned it off. The lady's voice was so high pitched it hurts my ears. I guess I didn't get the culture.
