One of Woody Allen's earlier, more slapstick-oriented efforts, Bananas tells the story of Fielding Mellish (Allen), a neurotic New Yorker who follows the object of his affections, Nancy (Louise Lasser), to the fictional Central American country of San Marcos, where she is involved in a revolution. Nancy wants nothing to do with Fielding, but he soon becomes a guest of the country's dictator (Carlos Montalban), before accidentally becoming the leader of San Marcos himself. Fielding is eventually shipped back to the US and tried as a subversive, but being that this is a comedy, and an especially light one at that, everything works out in the end. A far cry from Allen's later, more somber films, Bananas still works as an often hilarious amalgam of sight gags, one-liners, and bizarre asides. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi

If you don't find Woody Allen funny, chances are you haven't seen anything he made before 1978. Back then his movies were more comparable to Airplane! and Monty Python's Flying Circus. In this, Allen plays a loser who ends up leading a third world country. The worst scenes in this film are funnier than 99% of the crap put out today. Also recommended: Take the Money and Run, Sleeper, Love and Death, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex.

In short - Siskel and Ebert both named it Woody Allen's funniest movie EVER! Who do you trust? Enough said.

I was prepared to laugh my -ss off through the entire film. Well, the Howard Cossell interview with the assassinated Carribean island president was still hilarious, but the film didn't hold up in today's context. Woody's flirting with Louise Lasser was FUNNY, but got sillier and sillier and then the trip to Latin America became major league absurd and impossible to watch....so much for memories.

Woody Allen plays Fielding Mellish, a nebbish New-Yorker who eventually proves his manhood by helping Latin American rebels overthrow a right-wing dictatorship. Must be seen for a then unknown Sylvester Stallone's brief portrayal of a subway hoodlum. There is also a nice film score by Marvin Hamlisch. If you like absurdist comedies, you might like this one.

This movie was crazy and funny, but for me there were parts where it seemed like they were either trying too hard to be funny or trying to be funny too often. I still found it enjoyable though. The cameo appearances by Howard Cosell were excellent.

Incredibly funny, broad, slapstick political satire as Woody takes over a Latin American country to impress a girl. A few bits feel dated, and it did no™t make me laugh quite as much as Take the Money and Run™ when I recently re-watched Allen's early films, but still has some great comic moments. The whole trial sequence is genius worthy of the best of the Marx Brothers or W.C. Fields. (Or, in a more modern context Monty Python)

Just saw this fil after many years. I have seen it over 10 times....however in 2009 it doesnt hold up well. It seems very dated. I tried to turn on someone to this flick that has never seen or heard of it. We got thru the first 30 minutes....but then couldnt watch it, any longer. Used to love it....now I dont.
