Based on a novel by Jack Schaefer (writer of Shane), and previously filmed theatrically in 1970, the made-for-cable Monte Walsh is the still-timely saga of a dying way of life. Monte Walsh (Tom Selleck) and his friends are cowboys and bronco busters, plying their trade in the Wyoming Territory of 1892. Alas, the advance of civilization has all but rendered Monte and his comrades obsolete -- and with the increasing corporate buy-ups of Wyoming land, these relics of the Old West have practically nowhere else to go. Should Monte continue as before, seeking out the last of the wide open spaces, or should he follow the advice of his sweetheart Martine (Isabella Rosselini) and settle down in a steady job -- say, as a trick rider-roper in the traveling Wild West Show owned by impresario Colonel Wilson (Wallace Shawn)? This elegiac drama debuted January 17, 2003, on the TNT network as part of the cable service's "100 Years of Westerns" celebration. Movies with Tom Selleck never disappoint and he is as natural to the western genre as beans n' beef. What happens when the age of the cowboy comes to an end, corporations are moving in and fences are going up? See these life changes through the eyes of a handful of rough and ready cowpokes who each deal with the sundown of their wild times in a different manner. Rousing good adventure and excellent acting, Definitely on the great westerns list!

This movie was a disappointment. The story was very slow and the plot was almost non-existant. The movie seemed to be trying to show the passing of the cowboy lifestyle, but ended up seeming to glorify the immoral aspects of cowboy life. The heroes did bad things and and you were suppoed to think that was OK. I loved another of Tom Selleck's cowboy movies, Quigley Down Under, but I really didn't like this one.

If you like the Tom Selleck as a coyboy you will not be dissapointed. The only reason i did not give it 5 stars is the movie went, i feel a little to long for the story line and presentation - however do not let this stop you from watching it - it was a very good and truely watchable movie. A great change from laser guns and movies filled with unbelievable special effects and foul language.
