Focus is based on a little-known novel by playwright Arthur Miller, written when he was a very young man, just after WWII. Produced by media mogul Michael Bloomberg, and directed by Neal Slavin, the film takes place in New York, during the war. William H. Macy of Fargo plays Lawrence Newman, a middle-aged executive who lives with his mother. One night, he sees a neighbor cavorting with a Hispanic woman in the street. The incident turns ugly, and Lawrence later hears that the woman was raped and brutally assaulted. He tells no one. Faced with anti-Semitism at work and in his neighborhood, Lawrence resists joining the bigots, but he doesn't have the courage to stand up to them. He doesn't act when Fred (Meat Loaf Aday) and his other neighbors persecute the Jewish newsvendor, Finkelstein (David Paymer), who lives on the corner. But his lack of active participation in their efforts to drive Finkelstein out makes his neighbors suspicious. One day, Gertrude Hart (Laura Dern) walks into his office looking for a job. Lawrence is immediately struck by her flashy style and good looks, but he's been warned against hiring Jews. He suspects that she's Jewish, and she gets offended at his insinuations and storms out. Things get much worse for Lawrence when he gets a new pair of glasses. Everyone says they make him look Jewish. His boss decides he doesn't make the right impression, and tries to demote him. Lawrence is outraged and quits. He has trouble finding another job, until he runs into Gertrude again. The Jewish-owned firm she works for hires him. He apologizes to her and asks her out. They fall in love, and quickly marry. His neighbors, believing Gertrude is a Jew, grow more suspicious, and Lawrence soon finds himself in physical danger. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

This is a movie that I rented based on member ratings only. It turned-out to be a great movie. Arthur Miller's tale puts you into shoes of William Macy's character as he comes to grips with prejudice toward Jews. Meat Loaf appears in a supporting role and is quite good as Macy's bigoted neighbor. Everything about this film is top-notch. Highly recommended.

When I read the plot/outline of the movie I had a totally different impression of what it was about. But with that aside, it was a solid reminder of how pathetic & weak minded some of our society once was. The sad part is that there still are a few of the shameful part of our society out there. But I do like movies and books based in the real almost as much as I like science fiction. Macy & Dern do a nice job showing the weak of mind and the strong and what standing up for whats right and just is what we hope we are all about. Though I was expecting something else I have no regret that I got to see this and the idea that I could have passed this over completely bothers me. So, when you've seen the thrillers you've been waiting for and want to watch something else, this is just that movie to get. And did I mention that it's no 'B' cheap film? Quite the opposite.

A splendid movie. It handles the prejudice theme with tact and finesse--no in-your-face- victim politics

Surprisingly good. I'm a huge Macy fan as well as Arthur Miller but the end product is far better than the sum of its parts.

The story was written by a young Arthur Miller. The prejudices of that era are still in existence today. Anti-semitism began in 500 B.C. Many prejudices are still here with many religions, and will exist for many more years.

I agree with Tom D's rating and review. The movie was well acted and believable. It gets you into the mind and life of Lawrence Newman and what it must be like to live in a world or community that is "different" than you are.

I hate to write a tepid review of a work inspired by the great Arthur Miller, but this film is a failed, artsy dramatization of a novel that's now, thankfully, out-of-date. The dialogue, action and cinematography feel very staged, which keeps us at a distance from what should be a high-impact story.

3 stars for this movie is a little generous. The reason I rented it is due to the big names that star in the movie. However, I found the acting to be fairly obvious, as I could not get the visual of the camera, director, and crew out of my mind that are obviously present at time of shoot behind the camera. Good movies make you forget about their invisible presence and Focus is not one of them.

Story focusses on how a group eager to seize power can channel racism and discrimination in general into a very dark scenario and the movie shows how absurd this scenario is by its initial plot twist. There is a strong message that we all have to view ourselves as minorities and see through their eyes in order to stop very dark forces from taking over society. On a personal I know of real accounts where groups like the unions named in the movie and other activist organizations do target people for harasment as this movie portrays. The movies account while fictional could very easily be based on true stories and in not at all far fetched.

I really liked this one. It went a little over my young teens heads. And I had to stop the movie and explain some things, but well worth the viewing. As always, William H Macy is fantastic!!!!
