Director Wes Anderson and his longtime friend and writing partner Owen Wilson follow up Bottle Rocket (1996) and Rushmore (1998) with this similarly offbeat comedy about a dysfunctional family reunion. Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) was a successful attorney who had three children with his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston), an archaeologist. Each of the Tenenbaum kids was a precocious genius: Chas (Ben Stiller) made a killing as a child investor. Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior tennis champ and three-time U.S. Nationals winner. The adopted Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) was a playwright who won a 50,000-dollar Braverman Grant in the ninth grade. When Royal abruptly left his family, however, it was the beginning of two decades of betrayal and failure that would scar the Tenenbaums for life. Their past resentments are bitterly held against Royal when he suddenly reappears, claiming to have six weeks to live and a desire to reconnect with his family. Typically, Royal's story is a sham, but his presence and sincere desire for absolution soon have a profound effect on the Tenenbaums, who are each dealing with thwarted desires and relationships. Among them are Richie's lifelong love for Margot, who's unhappily married to Raleigh St.Clair (Bill Murray) and Etheline's eccentric engagement to Henry Sherman (Danny Glover), who wishes to marry her. The Royal Tenenbaums also co-stars Owen Wilson and features narration provided by Alec Baldwin. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

I couldn't find one single thing to laugh or cry at in this film. This movie is northing but a collection of sheer boredom.

Good movie. The characters are each so unique and different-but they blend together to make a patchwork wonder.

If you liked Rushmore or Igby Goes Down, you'll love this. Not your run-of-the-mill comedy. Everyone has a really quirky, weird,or slightly dark and odd persona. These are CHARACTERS not just regular dull people...they're funny because they're so uniquely into their own world, NOT because there are overt jokes. If you can get that, you'll wish there were more movies like this one. Lots of fun and soon to be a cult classic!

this is my most favorite movie of all time. i watched it in theaters twice, and i watch it repeatedly on dvd. owen wilson has the best character in the movie with the best gestures, lines, and attitude: "everyone knows custer died at little big horn. what this book presupposes is, maybe he didn't?" the music is AWESOME, the sets are so perfect for the tone of the movie, the cast is stellar, and there are so many wonderful quotes to share with your hardcore movie fan friends!

It may not be the most orginal idea but it's the best movie that has to deal with dyfunstional families. It also has a great soundtrack. It may look on the depressing and lonely side of life so i would say it is a dark dramatic comedy. It is similar to virgin suicides but better and with adults not teenagers

If you manage to sit through this VERY subtle film, you'll enjoy one of the best cry-laugh-cheer endings in a while. The characters feel a bit too simplified, but are sometimes entertaining. I liked it, but also remember being bored often. If you've been spoiled by the great deadpan humor of Dave Barry, this film will disappoint.

Could have been better. The previews made it out to better than it actually was.

Fabulous acting! This is a story about family and a aging man's attempt to redeem himself with his wife and children. I laughed my head off watching how each character deals with life's swerves and swipes. Wes Anderson's attention to details adds to the humor: notice the tug-a-war between characters played by Gene Hackman and Ben Stiller over the Havelina on the wall as symbolic of Royal Tenenbaum's return to the family fold.

I have to watch this at least once a year to be reminded of the pitfalls of wealth and intelligence. Sweet! And such a beautiful ending.

Twisted and offbeat, but engaging and interesting too. I loved the cast and their eccentric roles, and was pleasantly surprised with my interest in this movie.

Snarky, clever, excellent staging, artful camera shots, clever, simple character arcs, good pacing, clever, self-reflexive, cliched - did I say clever? I feel like this is one of those movies from which a certain type of people are spawned - that the film doesn't actually reflect the character of any real people but, rather, that people began to fashion themselves after the awkward spirit of this film. To that end, I guess we can "thank" Wes Anderson for the dearth of hipsters in the world. Did I say the movie was clever?
