Chu Yen-ping directs this all-star cast prison flick about cop Huang Wei (Tony Leung Kar-fai) who goes into the clink undercover to figure out how the fingerprints of a long deceased death-row inmate ended up at the scene of a recent murder. There he quickly runs afoul of gangland powers, making his life a living hell. His fellow inmates include Lung (Jackie Chan) who killed a card sharp to pay for an operation for his girlfriend; Triad (Andy Lau Tak-wah) who looking for the guy who killed his brother in jail; and Lui (Sammo Hung Kam-po) a sadsack con who regularly breaks out to visit his son. Later, Huang kills a prison guard and is sentenced to death. He soon learns that the jail's crazed warden is using supposedly executed criminals to kill crime bosses who are beyond the law. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
Some good fighting and gunplay, but this movie is all over the map. Whole sections of the plot are swiped from the old Paul Newman movie Cool Hand Luke. The movies feels like someone tossed the script in the air and reassembled the pages without sorting them. By the way, this is an ensemble piece, not a Jackie Chan star vehicle. Only for BIG fans of HK action films. You know who you are.
Didn't enjoy this movie much at all....but it was interesting to see an early movie where Jackie Chan was not the star. In fact, was disappointed that I didn't see him for the first 15 minutes of the movie. It was amusing to see how Chinese movie makers try to copy American movies-without much success!
Not the usual Chan movie. He wasn't the star. Not much martial arts. Lots of cursing. Most of the other actrs were lousy. But it was an interesting storyline. Not the usual for Jackie.
Jackie Chan tries serious and dark through a Chinese copy of Cool Hand Luke. Terrible. Tried to watch the whole thing but couldn't take it - pulled the disk half-way through.
