In 1977, George Lucas released Star Wars, the ultimate sci-fi popcorn flick-turned-pop-culture myth machine. It quickly became the biggest money-making film of all time and changed the shape of the film industry. After two successful sequels (1980's The Empire Strikes Back and 1983's Return of the Jedi) that extended the story of the first film, Lucas took some time off to produce movies for others, with mixed success. In 1999, Lucas returned to the Star Wars saga with a new approach -- instead of picking up where Return of the Jedi left off, Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace would be the first of a trilogy of stories to trace what happened in the intergalactic saga before the first film began. Here, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) is a young apprentice Jedi knight under the tutelage of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson); Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who will later father Luke Skywalker and become known as Darth Vader, is just a nine-year-old boy. When the Trade Federation cuts off all routes to the planet Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are assigned to settle the matter, but when they arrive on Naboo they are brought to Amidala (Natalie Portman), the Naboo queen, by a friendly but opportunistic Gungan named Jar Jar. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan plan to escort Amidala to a meeting of Republic leaders in Coruscant, but trouble with their spacecraft strands them on the planet Tatooine, where Qui-Gon meets Anakin, the slave of a scrap dealer. Qui-Gon is soon convinced that the boy could be the leader the Jedis have been searching for, and he begins bargaining for his freedom and teaching the boy the lessons of the Force. The supporting cast includes Pernilla August as Anakin's mother, Terence Stamp as Chancellor Valorum, and Samuel L. Jackson as Jedi master Mace Windu. Jackson told a reporter before The Phantom Menace's release that the best part about doing the film was that he got to say "May the Force be with you" onscreen. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

It's good to see what happened before episodes IV-VI. This was a great "prequel" so to speak! Everybody will love this movie! No doubt whatsoever! It'll help you understand the original trilogy better!

Great story and true to the "originals". The great use of computerization, particularly the race scenes, is particularly fascinating. Don't miss -- great for family viewing.

A good start for the Star Wars saga. The cast is very good and performed as well as they could with the directing available. Lucas may have had his hands full with producing and directing. However, it did not take away from the adventure- pod race, space battle, saber fight. The movie also gives a natural explanation of The Force. The previously shown trilogy gave the Force a supernatural vibe. Contrary to popular sentiment, the ending was necessary to allow the story of Anakin to progress. The saga is the wholly-owned creation of Lucas and he makes sole decision as to where the adventure takes us. If you like good storytelling then this movie is for you.

In this episode George Lucas tries to establish alot for one film. You will probably need to watch this movie several times just to comprehend all of the story lines that George Lucas is trying to introduce. There is probably enough of a story to have the events of Episode I take place over two movies. It is very smartly written though if you really take a break from watching the beautiful special effects and really listen to the story you will be surprised at how much deeper The Phantom Menace is and where it fits in the Star Wars saga.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Meance is seriously a fun start for the prequel trilogy of Star Wars. You won't believe your eyes when you see the first episode of Star Wars! The saga has just begun!

Maybe it was me, but I found the story line a little hard to follow. The effects are better than the original 3 (of course) but it seems they relied too heavily on that alone. The only reason they made episodes 1-3 is so we can see how Anakin becomes Darth Vader. This is a good start. Beyond that, this plot was rather boring. Also, this entire story line could have done without the bumbling Jar Jar Binks. Overall a good movie and one you'll need to see if you want to get the whole story.

What a huge disappointment. I thought I was watching a cartoon rather than anything worthy of being in the same category as the original Star Wars Trilogy.

Episodes I, II, and III leave you wondering what happened. All these years and this is what we are given. Personally, I believe that the idea of Star Wars has become public domain and George Lucas damaged the brand. The public should be able to sue him for the rights and remake episodes 1-3. He was more focused on making money than on delivering a quality film. As a Star Wars fan, I was disappointed.
