Anastasia is adapted from the popular stage play by Marcelle Maurette. The scene is Paris in the early 1920s. Ingrid Bergman plays a would-be suicide who is rescued by Russian expatriate Yul Brynner. Brynner's motives are far from altruistic; together with a group of Russian cohorts, he hopes to pass Bergman off as Princess Anastasia, the daughter of the late Czar Nicholas. If the conspirators are successful, they stand to collect the ten million pounds held in trust for Anastasia in the Bank of England. The biggest obstacle facing Brynner and company is the surviving Romanov empress (Helen Hayes), who must be convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that Bergman is the genuine article. Anastasia represented Ingrid Bergman's return to Hollywood after several years' exile following her "scandalous" affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
I am fascinated with the idea that Anastasia could've survived. Ingrid Bergman was wonderful in the film but there was a detachment with Yul Brynners' character. The ending was disappointing as well...
This was my 1st time with this movie. It is a real good movie with great acting, but the ending left me hanging. This really ruined it for me, or I would have given it 5 stars. It really needed something.
This movie is beautifully filmed but it lacks something. What it doesn't lack is another fantastic Ingrid Bergman performance. She rightfully won an Academy Award for her performance here, even though the movie wasn't that good. I really wasn't impressed with Yul bynner here.
I felt that the main characters were not developed. The relationship between Ingrid and Yul didn't even make sense from what was shown. It did a good job making you wonder if she really was Anastasia.
This is a great classic movie with a stunning performance by Ingrid Bergman, who richly deserved her best actress win for this role. The worst aspect of this movie was the sound quality, the "dolby surround sound" is extrememly poor quality and quite distracting through parts of the movie. It would sound better in a straight mono track.
Good movie. Could not feel the love relationship between Ingrid and Yul. Yul just did not really hold the charm of leading man either. Did not anticipate the ending. It left you hanging. It could have been wrapped up much better. Also, there are no songs in the whole movie. It would have been a great movie if Ingrid would have broken out in song once or twice, adding to the mood.
