Centennial (1978) Reviews

Centennial (1978)
Member Rating:
The longest (26-1/2 hours), most expensive ($25 million) and most complicated (four directors, five producers, five cinematographers, almost 100 speaking parts, several hundred extras) project made for television up to that time, Centennial was shown in two- and three-hour installments over a period of four months. An adaptation of James Michener's best-selling novel, it told the story of the settling of the American West by looking at the founding of the fictional town of Centennial, Colorado, from the settling of the area in the late 18th century to the present. Emmy-nominated for film editing and art direction, it boasts of sterling performances from Richard Chamberlain as frontiersman Alexander McKeag, Robert Conrad as the French-Canadian trapper Pasquinel, and a surprisingly powerful performance from former football star Alex Karras as compassionate but iron-willed immigrant farmer Hans Brumbaugh. ~ Brian Gusse, Rovi

It was as great as I remember when it was on television, but even better without the commercials. The first disc was five hours long, and I watched the whole thing! Absolutely wonderful, I can't wait till you send me the rest!

It was as good today as it was when i would watch it on TV, only better this time. I didn't have to sit through all of those commercials. I would enjoy watching disc #1 over again. Ralph D.

Huge cast, great acting, great camera work and top script keeps going pretty much all the way thru the entire movie. One of the best series ever. Recommend it highly.

Without a doubt, the best mini-series of all time. How can I get a copy of this?

To anyone who has watched the previous episodes and enjoyed them, I would say skip the last one. It has none of the flavor and adventure in the previous installments, substituting instead non-stop preaching on the environment and not-too-subtle reminders of the nobility of the Indians and demonization of the whites. Whether you agree with this kind of "political statement" or not, it ain't entertainment. They actually showed the Skimmerhorn massacre twice in the same episode! Having enjoyed watching this old miniseries again after so many years, the last installment almost ruined it for me. I really mean it: skip the last one.

The whole Centennial series (6 discs, 12 episodes) was very long to watch. But it was generally entertaining. Unfortunately, the last episode had way too many flashbacks. It did tie up a few minor loose ends, but it really did not contribute to the story in any significant way. And the final episode revealed what had been hinted at all along -- that the American Indians were good stewards of the earth, and that the evil white man came and destroyed everything. I don't believe that premise, so I hold a grudge against the makers of the story and the series. If you embrace that premise, you should enjoy the series.
