Pumping Iron (1976)

Pumping Iron (1976)
Member Rating:
Arnold Schwarzenegger gained his first real notoriety outside body-building circles with this documentary about a group of men training for the Mr. Olympia contest. Arnold had already won the title six times before, and was training for his seventh victory before retiring to fully pursue his acting career (which began to catch fire with his likable turn in Stay Hungry, released the same year) when this was shot. Here he displays an easy charm and wicked sense of humor as he plays mind games with his competitors and explains how getting pumped up for competition always reminded him of sex (which might explain why he seems so cheerful). And what is Arnold smoking in his dressing room after the contest? Future Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno is also on hand, and his fierce determination as he goes through a brutal weight lifting regimen shouting "Arnold! Arnold!" speaks both to his own desire to win and how strong a presence Schwarzenegger was in body-building at the time. You don't have to be a body building fan to enjoy Pumping Iron, though Arnold is the one contestant who shows obvious star quality. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I am a female who is entering the fitness world. I thoroughly enjoyed this docu-drama. I liked learning about how the sport of bodybuilding was launched from the dark ages into the spotlight. The Special Features were excellent and I had fun hearing Arnold and the other bodybuilders talk about how things were "back-in-the-day." This is a must-see for anyone who likes the fitness and bodybuilding industry.

I'm not a bodybuilder so I didn't know what to expect from this. What I found is that the movie if very entertaining. Arnold is great. Very good sense of humor and you can see why he is such a ledgend in the sport of bodybuilding. The film takes place in the late 70s when he was in his prime and a champion bodybuilder. This is a documentary, but arnold adds a little acting to it to make it more entertaining. You even get to see him smoke weed. And he wasn't acting... It is about the Mr. Universe contest where Arnold, Lou Ferigino, and Franco Columbo all train and compete for the title. The extras are great too as you see all the people in the film years later. They all talk openly about what was happeing at the time. If you like Arnold films, and haven't seen this, rent it becuase you won't be dissappionted.
