Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi (2004)

Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi (2004)
Member Rating:
A teenager discovers he may be a genius, which turns out to be a less-than-welcome surprise to his family, in this comedy-drama from Israel. Shlomi (Oshri Cohen) is a 17-year-old boy who has unwittingly become the most important member of his household -- with his mildly-paranoid father (Albert Illouz) divorced from his mother (Esti Zakhem), busy supporting the family as a nurse. Shlomi cheerfully looks after his aging grandfather, cooks the meals, keeps tabs on his brother, Doron (Jonathan Rozen), and tries to keep the house clean. With so much going on, Shlomi doesn't have much time for (or interest in) his schoolwork, and he's more preoccupied with his girlfriend Tehila (Rotem Zisman) and his efforts to move their relationship to the next level; however, Shlomi's math teacher (Nisso Khavia) discovers that Shlomi has a rare gift for working with numbers and is eager to transfer him to another school where he can hone this talent. But Shlomi's family resists the idea, partly because they're not sure if he can do the work and partly because they don't want to see the family's anchor go away. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie 's a surprise to me. I saw it twice!! I fell in love with the story and the boy. I loved the scene which it reminded me of Greek Drama. (when he dreams...and all of the people in his life...together...) I love the scenes with his grandpa...Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi... I love it depicts a life in Israel...Haifa... that they live...with worries... I love the fact that his mother and her Morrocan...bashing...It hit close to home ...experiencing bashing cultural things (in my family) Probably that's the reason I love the movie. he's an outsider in his own family. I recommend!!!! (to any age) because he (Shlomi succeeds)...

They took what could easily have been Yet Another Cheesy COA Drama and twisted into a truly touching film, with depth. Gem-like subtleties and carefully braided significance litter the film throughout. Only on its surface does it appear to be a family/kids after school special (or something along those lines). The comedic aspects are also appreciable, including a few pieces of dry wit that could bring a smirk to even the most cynical of critics. I probably won't watch it again, but only because it's worth remembering well.
